I think I am getting a cold!  I wasn't on 6mp long enough before to run into cold & flu season last year, and normally this time of year I am vitamin C & echinacea girl to boost my immune system......this year, eh, not so much anymore what with the immunosuppressors. :)
So for people who are taking 6mp and the like, is there anything extra or special to do for a cold?  I don't want to get knocked-down sick but am not sure what I should be doing differently.  Will I get a worse cold than I normally would, or be sick for a few days longer?  Or am I just more susceptible to actually getting the colds?

When I was on imuran, I was actually the healthiest I had been in years. I have had good luck with nose sprays in the past. You might want to ask about something like that.

I've been on 6mp since 7/05 and haven't noticed any difference with colds. If I even get one, it doesn't last any longer than it would when I was med free. I did get strep throat 3 times last spring...that was weird. I got the flu shot for the 1st time a few weeks ago and have felt fine. Good Luck!

I take Imuran and now Prednisone and I work in a nursing home. I am a big target for colds ! Last winter i was sick one time a month for a good week. I trialed many cold products during this time. I swear by Zicam, its over the counter cold product. My friend is a pharmacist and rec it to me. I get the swabs that go in your nose, they look like a q-tip. It costs about $12 for the box of them. I do them as directed every 4 hours, and keep to the schedule. It is the best $12 you can spend on yourself. You are supposed to start it the first signs of a cold. I had the starts of a cold about 2 weeks, ago went and got my Zicam and sure enough the cold was mild and is long gone.. good luck.. Zicam, Zicam... i can't say enough good things !
28 Year old Female. Dx with Crohns 2005. Currently take Imuran 50 mg. had 3 remicade infusions which put me in remission.
Dx with Pyoderma Gangrenos (PG) Nov '07, currently on Prednisone 40mg for PG, slowly tapering from 60mg ...  most importantly the taper is in effect !

Thanks for the input!  I didn't end up getting a cold, knock on wood. :)

I guess my question is, if things like Vitamin C help support the immune system and I am on 6mp which tries to supress the immune system, how will that work?  Am I more likely to get sick or just not as well equipped to fight off the cold/infection/etc so I will be either more sick or sicker for longer?

I could ask my dr but he seems to have a lot of blank stares when it comes to medical questions.
