Has anyone had surgery to repair a rectovaginal fistula?  What does that involve?  I am supposed to see a surgeon about this soon-just wondering what to expect.

I would google rectovaginal repair and familiarize yourself with the different procedures and their success rates. I've read that the patch has a low success rate, a temporary ostomy has a high success rate, but there are other procedures I don't know much about.

Obviously you've tried the medications and they aren't working?

I have tried all the meds(remicade, flagyl, cipro, asacol, 6mp etc...) with no luck. I've had the fistula for approx. 9 years and have had no real problems other than leakage. In the last month I've been having spasms and discomfort. GI sent me to surgeon because he suspects the fistula is the cause. I have had ct scan, small bowel follow through and am scheduled for a manometry? and a colonoscopy done by the colorectal surgeon himself so he can see exactly where everything is and what is going on. I figured this might be common in people with crohns but haven't seen much about it on internet or this sight.

yeah, tell me about not finding much info on these anywhere! I've been googling everything in sight, to no avail. If you don't mind me asking, how was this diagnosed? I am almost sure that I have one also, and have had a pelvic & abdominal CAT scan which showed nothing. My GI set that up for me. I am seeing my gyn. this coming Friday, & hoping she will tell me what's going on. The only problems/symptoms I'm haivng are leakage also, & I truly can't tell if it's fecal matter or something weird going on with my menstrual cycle. There is no odor to the discharge, but it tends to occur mostly when I strain during a BM, & shortly thereafter. It's not constant. Were you able to figure out what it was prior to actually being diganosed? I'm totally in the dark. I'd love to hear what you find out re. surgical repair, as I too may be looking at it. I haven't tried any meds yet, since there hasn't been any diagnosis. If I get any useful info from my gyn. I'll post it here.

Once when I had a sigmoidoscopy my GI saw the ulcer was tunneling towards my vagina.  It didn't make it through, I started Remicade and it closed although there is still an ulceration there. Have you had a colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy and they weren't able to find it?  Mine is only 2 inches up my retum so it was easy to find.
