Hi there
I just found out today that I am pregnant for the first time. It is very early. I am super excited but also hesitant to get to excited because of this disease. I usually take Remicade and was due to get one yesterday but I got a positive home pregnancy test. In Canada you are unable to get Remicade if you are pregnant. So now I am due for my drug and can't get it. I am having trouble getting through to my specialist and my family doctor is on Mat leave (go figure). I was just wondering if anybody had any advice or experiences they could share with me. Anything is appreciated.

Congratulations! I was pregnant prior to my illness, so I'm not much help, but I have read that many people have successful pregnancies and very healthy babies with Crohn's. I'm sure others will chime in who have more experience than me.

Congrats. Sorry I canot help as far as advise since in Canda you cannot get your medicine. Maybe your doc can suggest something else maybe even Humira but since you know you are pregnant they may not allow you to do that either but you do give it to yourself. GL with it all and hope you get some good answers soon about what to do as far as meds.

Remicade is considered a category B medication during pregnancy and from the research thus far is considered perfectly safe. There are a lot of girls that have had Remicaid babies here-Stef comes to mind for sure. Crohns does not have any impact on miscarriage unless your Crohns is active when you become pregnant-it is a little higher rate then-but not a given. I just received a bunch of information on pregnancy/remicaid, etc.... from my doctor if you are interested. I don't really know how to e-mail to you without you posting your address though. Good luck. E-mail stef on this website for more details. Her user name is stef something....

Had 2 successful pregnancies with CD...got thru them without CD meds but it was very difficult. My babies however were worth every worry and every sacrifice.
Whatever the doctor decides to do as far as meds go...have faith that many women here have had successful pregnancies while on CD medication. You won't be alone...
Congratulations ...try not to worry too much....how are you feeling so far? You will get thru it with flying colors and so will this precious baby. '
Come talk to us often....let us know how you are doing...we'll be thinking and praying for you !

WOW! Congrats on your pregnancy!!!! So, in Canada can you absolutely NOT get it at all??? Or can the doctor do a medical over-ride? It's very important for you to not have a flare and the beginning part of pregnancy can feel like a mini-flare because of all of the hormonal shifts. Get a hold of your GI ASAP and insist that you stay on your meds. Can you come to the U.S.??? :) I know that's crazy, but if you can't get REmicade in Canada while you're pregnant, at least you could come and get it here.

Let us know what your doc says. And yes, email me if you'd like! Click on my user name to get my email address.

Thank you all for your best wishes advice. Still working through my options. I would prefer to get thru it without medication if possible. I guess my concern is miscarrying because of a flare up but I am trying not to get a head of myself. One day at a time for now. I will keep posting.

Congrats! I was diagnosed after my 2 babies were born, but I can tell you that in some respects I was healthier while pregnant that not. I was surprised that my "messed up" body could do what it did! I am constantly amazed at my 2 healthy kids. :-)

I had a HUGE flare during pregnancy starting at my 11th week. I was very sick the entire time, in and out of the hospital 6 times, on pain meds and pretty much MISERABLE!! Although at the time I was NOT diagnosed with Crohn's. I recently had a bowel resection and am feeling wonderful!! I just went to my GI yesterday and he said it is FINE for us to try to have another baby and stay on Remicade (which is the only drug that has worked for me). I am sorry to hear that your options might be limited to something out of your control in Canada. Goodluck and best wishes!!!

CONGRATS to you!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am jsut now being diagnosed but suspect I have had this for several years now that I look back. If I am correct on when this started (going by symptoms only) then I had one of my pregnancies with CD. Obviously I was not medicated and it was a rough pregnancy. The 3rd trimester was the hardest and I spent several evenings going to the hospital to get rehydrated (vomiting and the big D non stop). But my baby ended up being full term and very healthy, most importantly, I would do it all over again!

Try to keep all of your Drs in the loop about what is going on and I am sure you and the baby will be fine!

Enjoy the pregnancy, it goes so fast!!!!
