Hello there everyone. I am writing to see if anyone has or had the same problems I have been having.

I am 27 and have CF w/b.cepacia. Over this summer I went through a pretty bad bout of pnemonia and lost a lot of strength. Not weight per se because I am actually gaining weight, but muscle tone and conditioning. I have been on a relatively small dose (20mg) of prednisone for about 3 years now.

Recently I have been pulling muscles left and right. I've pulled one in the front of my chest, my sides, and most recently my back. The pain is almost unbearable and definitely debilitating. Percocets are the only relief for the pain and it takes me a while to recover from them. I know the prednisone can make you more vunerable to muscle tears/pulls and I also think that me being out of shape is a factor too.

My question is, does anyone else out there with CF have these muscle problems? I just want to be able to gauge if this is something that happens to a lot of folks with CF or if I am some sort of exception.

Anyone who can tell me some stories, has advice or anything they want to share please post your words.

Thanks so much!!!!

Hi auggie,

Can't really help you on this, as never had this problem. I have some muscles problems-but mine are all about muscle enzyme levels and not related too CF or steroids.
However, I can sympathised with you on pain. Nefopam (aka Acupan) is good for targeting muscle pain, and may help you. Heat packs are also good for pain in one place.

I do know though-that you aren't alone in steroids causing pain. I have heard other stories similar from my friends. The pain usually begins too fade after they have stopped taking steroids. Do you have a finish date for them, or are you just on them long term, for as long as you need them?

My suggestion would be, ring your doctor (or cf team if you have one) and see whether there is anything they can suggest, which might help. 3 years is a long time too be on steroids, and there is no wonder that you are in so much pain.

Hope it gets better soon
