I am a 56 year old female who was recently diagnosed with bronchiectasis. I have always been told (at least the last 20 years) I had asthma and have been coughing up large amounts of mucus for years. I also have a history of diverticulitis with resulting colon resection, numerous liver cysts, and a non-functioning gallbladder that was removed. I am currently struggling with reoccurring bouts of pneumonia and have recently starting having abdominal distention, mucus in my stools and frequent diarrhea. I am slightly overweight and have not been losing weight but feel lousy most of the time. My question is could these symptoms be CF related? Thanks for any insights anyone can provide.

Jamcc, Yes, it is possible. There are quite a few CFers out there who have to work to keep weight OFF, not on. I am one of them. It would probably be worth a sweat test, or genetic screening. It is also possible for a CF mutation to not get "triggered" until later in life. How's your blood sugar?

Thanks so much for the reply. Actually my blood sugars have been a bit high (130s-140s fasting) for the last couple of years but have been coming down in the last month or so (115s). I also have had a terrible time trying to lose weight, nothing seems to work. I had never been overweight before the last couple of years but have been attributing it to age.

Definitely get tested - not just with a sweat test (at your age it will probably say little). My wife was 66 when proven to have CF - had been told for 10 years "Not possible! You'd be dead by now." She is now 73 & still going. Needed gene sequencing to show her second mutation which is quite nasty.
So get tested - initially for the more common mutations but don't stop there especially if the initial testing shows you are heterozygous.
Don't let your Doctor fob you off.

Hi Jamcc,

I could have written the same as you - almost identical stories. Did you ask the doctor to check you for CF? Did you have it?
