Hello. I've made a few posts here and I read about some of the sinus problems that we (cystics) are prone to. So I just thought I would write now to share what I was told to do for my accute sinusitis. This is a at-home remedy that was prescribed to me by my family physician. I went to see him about my sinus' and he said that he had just sent another person with the same accute sinus infection to see a specialist (a 8 hour drive from where I lived at the time). The guy came back from the specialist with this home remedy.

Take:
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

and mix in 8oz of warm water until the solution is saturated. That is - stir it until you dont see any grains and the water starts looking kinda cloudy. Now take that solution and find some way to get it up into your sinus's. I know there exists a turkey-baster effect which can be used. I initially snorted it back but it felt so unnatural that I didnt like doing it. Instead I got one of the 10cc syringes from the cupboard and used that (with no needle on it of course). Just fill the syringe up, tilt your head to one side and empty it slowly into your sinus's. IF IT BURNS - then your mixture is too thick and you need to dilute with some water.

It sounds terrible but it really really works. I like to try blowing my nose hard afterwards to make sure all the gunk comes out. Basically we are creating a salt-water rinse. This is more effective than the stuff we can buy over-the-counter at the drugstore.

I have not had any sinus trouble since I started doing this. Now that my sinus's are clear I only do it when I feel like I'm starting to get stuffy. But for the first while you should probably do it twice daily (morning and night).

I hope this helps everyone.
:)
Keep smiling!

wow. there are so many things that I could go on about on my nose. First of all, that mix that your Dr gave you is a little different than what I do.  I use the same ingreds, but only in lgr quantities.  I use about 1/5ths cup salt PICKLING SALT and about half a tbsp of baking soda. you need to get a syringe and blast it up there.  It hurts, and sometimes it comes out my eyes, but when I tell you what I had to do, you will really feel inclined to do this. In January 2004, I had a terrible sinus headache.  This was nothing new, however, I had had them every day for the past few weeks.  I went to the Doctor and he recommended me see a ENT (Ear, Nose, throat specialist) and so I did.  The ENT recommended that I get a CT Scan of my Sinusses. I got the scan.  When we reviewed it with the ENT, the whole left side (and part of the right side) was black, which meant that it was not getting any airflow. It was blocked.  The ENT took a scope and looked up my nose (it hurt too) and saw pollyps.  like a field of pollyps in my left side, and some in my right.  He recommended Pollyp Removal surgery, where they just take a scope up and snip the pollyps off and suction them out (I'm under general anest. ) When I woke up, my nose and throat hurt really bad.  I couldn't breathe through my nose because of the blood clots.  I went home, and started to breathe through my nose within a week.  A Week after the surgery my nose started to drip blood.  I thought, it was just some post op drainage- thats all.  WRONG.  we couldnt get the bleeding to stop.  so my mom and dad ( I cant drive, I was only 13) rushed me to the local hospital (not where I had the surgery) and they couldnt figure it out.  By now, I had about   1/3 of an ice cream bucket full and it just kept coming.  They put a "Tampon" in my nose (small one of course)  and it just soaked it up.  The rest went down my throat.  They then said, we cant do any more, so were sending you to the hospital where I had the surgery done.  At The ER at CARDINAL GLENNON childrens hospital, in St Louis, MO they couldnt get it to stop either.  They put another tampon in (Further though... talk about pain)  and it completely stopped it. (For about an hour)  It started again.  I told the nurse, but she wouldnt listen to me. she said... it'll stop soon, and I said NO IT HAS STARTED AGAIN.  so she left and I had to try to get some rest (it was about 3 in the AM) (By this time i am in a regular room trying to get some rest) when duty calls.  My dad stayed over with me and was going to assist me to get to the restroom.  So I got up and ready to go, and i vomitted.  I fainted.  I was moved to the AMCU (acute medical care unit) there and i was so out of it, my mom said that I didnt know them and that I was reaching out and doing really weird stuff.  (That was from all of the blood loss which accumulated to about 2 pints)  I had to have a transfusion.  Then I went to emergency surgery where they clotted the places that i had been hemohoraging.  it was horrible. well, that was my experience with my sinus trouble.
