Hello Claire!

Yes, I do have ABPA, and the way that I get treated for it, whenever I have a flare up is I go on the steriod Prednisone.  Though I hate going on it, especially for long periods of time (I'm not going to lie, the side effects aren't the greatest, and I get hit with pretty much everyone that that steriod has to offer...) but it does knock down the ABPA for a good while and then i don't need more long term treatments of prenisone for a long time.

 Good Luck!

Hi Alex
Thanks for the reply. Thats pretty much the treatment I get too. I just wanted to see were there any alternatives because steroids are pretty tough going. Are you from the states?

Hello Claire and Alex...
I was diagnosed with ABPA 9 years ago and I was put on Prednisone as well as the anti-fungal drug, Sporanox (generic: Itraconazole). Prednisone naturally helped out bigtime - and at the time, I wasn't sure how effective Sporanox was.
I was later put on Xolair shots (generic: Omalizumab) to block the action of IgE in your body(mine too), thereby preventing an allergic reaction to an allergen.
This all seemed to work pretty well - even after I was weaned off of prednisone for some time.
about a year ago or more, though, I just got tired of driving to and fro the doctors' office to get my Xolair shots. Plus I felt like a lab rat for too long...so I stopped all medications, including shots.
Well I haven't been doing very well over the past several months, and I know that lung health and function deteriorates with ABPA, if left unchecked.
So I went back on Itraconazole several days ago - and I swear the congestion I had over the previous weeks was GONE the next day...and hasn't come back. I feel better with all the extra oxygen too tongue
I think I will see my allergist to see about going back on Xolair shots, just to help keep me breathing easily and consistently.
Let me know how things are going with you folks...hope everyone is well.
