Hi All

My 18 month old son has just had a four day stay in hospital to be treated for a chest infection.  He's had a bad chest on and off for the past 6 or 7 months and has had antibiotics and various inhalers.

Chest infection is now under control but docs are concerned about his tummy - its very bloated at times, and that coupled with the coughing, wheezing and chest infections, they have asked for a sweat test next Tuesday.

I know the tummy thing is a symptom, but have browsed this forum and no one else has really mentioned it?  He's gained weight fine and was on the 99th centile just before his first birthday.  We had to have an ultra sound but all it showed was lots of gas - we're waiting on an appointment for a full scan.  We're also waiting on results from various allergy tests and stool samples.

Will I get sweat test results instantly?  I can't bear this waiting lark.

Hello Jaelor and welcome to Healing Well!

You should have the results of the sweat test the same day.  Make sure it is being done at an accredited CF center/facility.

Hope your son starts to feel better and you get some answers.  I truly know how hard the waiting is and it sounds like you and your doctor are on the road to finding out a diagnosis.

Hugs.

Welcome Vera!  Your daughter and grandaughter has a wonderful support system, that being YOU!

One of the main reasons I had my son tested was the salty skin/sweat.  He would have salt crystals all in his eyebrows and sideburns when it was just a tad warm out.  He also had failure to thrive.  He is doing very well now, although he could pack on some more pounds.

Ask any questions and there will be someone here to help you as best as they can.

Good luck and hugs! :-)

Hi Vera, My hands get very wrinkly too - as I understand it its got to do with the process of osmosis (transfer of salty body fluid through her skin into the water because the water has a less dense concentration of salt) - thats what makes our hands wrinkly.

I access the CF forums directly from this link:

https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=18

If you are using a computer at home, you can go to the site, then go up to Favorites and click Add to Favorites - then whenever you want to look you can just click on Favorites and then click on the HealingWell.com Forum and it will pop right to the right place. I hope that helps.

I'm not sure - when you write cepatia - if you mean burkholderia cepacia which is a bacteria that CF'ers tend to get from eachother, Its a pretty bad bug, as most strains are resistant to alot of antibiotics. And it apparently causes soft rot in onions and garlic (I'm not even allowed to peel any at home now!). Anyway I hope your grandbaby gets all the care she needs.

*hugs from Canada*

Hi nannavera,

I am from England too, in Lancashire.  Have you looked at the information that the Cystic Fibrosis Trust have to give.  It is full of interesting information, ways to fundraise, has lots of advice and helpful tips.  It is more specifically for people in the UK but is worth checking out.

Hi Jaelor,

My grand-daughter has a swollen tummy but she cannot put weight on so this may not help.

The salty taste is there though.

Hope you get news soon.

Hello Vera.  Just click on your highlighted name (or anyones) and the function will appear to see what their posts have been.  You must be logged in to access this.

My son's hands and feet are always wrinkly.  Even when he doesn't get them wet or is sweating (although they are more prominent than) he also has hyperlineated lines on his hands and feet.
