There is a custom (bit old fashioned now... not sure if anyone does it anymore) in Wales where people used to make a CALENNIG and on New Years Day, went door to door (Like Halloween) with it for loose change. After you came back, you put the Calennig in the window (For as long as it lasts) to receive good luck.
They are really easy to make (Good for kids) as well. All you need is an apple, cloves, 3 ice-pop sticks (I think you call them popcicles in the US), a piece of holly and a candle.
1) Spike apple with cloves all over
2) Insert sticks so that will stand up by itself
3) Create a hollowed out bit at the top and insert candle
4) Insert holly infront of candle
5) Light candle
Theres something new and exciting to try with the kids!
