I think that generally you should listen to your boss. If the maintenance guy gets mad, let him know that your boss made the decision & if he wants to discuss it, he really needs to talk with your boss. If the maintenance guy continues to refuse to listen, let your boss know what's going on.
If it were me, I would only talk to the owners if my boss was being horribly unreasonable, calling me names, shouting at me, or making sexual comments to me because otherwise there's a good chance I could lose my job. Owners will take steps to protect employees who come forward to tell about one of those problems, but otherwise the employees are generally ignored & the complaint is reported to the boss. Bosses tend to get really mad when their employees go over their head and talk with their supervisor. So, if you're hoping to keep your job (unless, the boss is breaking the law or something) then you probably should keep the negative comments to yourself -- and of course, you can always share your complaints here & we will be here to support you.
