NO effects from generic wellbutrin. Still hope for name brand or Aplenzin?

Hey, I'm a 24 y/o male and have dysthymia. I also have a history of alcohol and substance abuse. My mood isn't really an issue, but my lack of motivation, energy, and concentration is. I tried generic Wellbutrin, two months of Teva Budeprion SR @ 300mg/day, then two months of Global Bupropion SR @ 400mg/day. Zero effects from any of it, except possibly slightly disturbed sleep. I quit taking anything for a few months and now I am taking 150mg/day of Wellbutrin XL (it's been 3 days), and I haven't noticed anything again but am aware it can take a month or two. I don't know where, but I read someone's experience saying they had no effects from generic (read: none, NOT 'only got the side effects or bad effects') and switched to brand name and got great results. Has anyone heard or experienced this?? Or has anybody gotten effects from Aplenzin when they had none from bupropion. Thanks.

P.S. I've also taken Adderall XR with some benefit but not much, as well as Provigil which helped even less.

Hi Melvin3,

Welcome to HealingWell and to the depression board.

I have also heard that about the difference between generic and name-brand, but I've also heard it go the other way too: that someone who wasn't having great results with the manufacturer-label did better on generics. It probably has more to do with the additives that go into the medicine, not the active ingredients, because those will be the same. But I'm not a doctor -- I couldn't say.

Perhaps you should consider another medication other than bupropion. Everything you list is a variation on the same drug. Have you tried other anti-depressants? Is your pdoc just insistent that this is the medication for you?

Hey thanks for the reply. I've also read a lot about the differences between generic and name brand, and how the generic doesn't work as well, however that's different than my case. The reason I'm insistent on Wellbutrin is because I refuse to try SSRI's and bupropion just seems to have all the effects I need/want, my doc hasn't suggested anything yet (I just switched to a psychiatrist). I don't wanna try SSRI's because I don't feel depressed at all, and am already lethargic and tired a lot, as well as the addictive nature of them.

Hi there,
Welcome to the forum.  Did you say that you were not depressed?  Or did I read something wrong?
You are just looking for something for energy.  I take generic adderal and I think it works better than the capsules.  You take it twice a day though.  Morning and afternoon.  Each pill lasts about four to six hours.
I have fibromyalgia so I am always fatigued.  And this works well for me.
But for the wellbutrin, three days isn't long enough to know if it will work for you or not.  It generally takes six to eight weeks to reach it's full effect.  I didn't like it because it caused me to not be able to sleep and gave me restless leg syndrome.  Where the adderall only keeps you active during the day.  What milligram were you on of the adderall?  Maybe it wasn't enough.  I take 30mg twice a day.  I think that is as high as it goes.  Not possitive.  My doctor just increased it for me because I am working now.
Well, I hope that you feel better soon and get some energy.  Best wishes to you.
Hugs, Karen
