Hi all, I have been doing so well since my surgery a month ago. I have had to go back to the hospital twice though and my progress is slowing. One of my incisions got a staph infecrtion so have been on heavy duty antibiotics which make me feel sick but my wound is healing well. I really thought I was on the mend for good and then Tues. I developed really bad stomach pains, nausea and so much vomiting. Back to the ER. They took X rays, said everything looked OK, blood work very normal, so they don't know what it was, maybe a bug of some kind. I went to see my surgeon yesterday. He said it could have been a bug but also could be that because my reconnection of my colon inside is healing that I may be forming adhesions at the site and its possible I could be getting a bowel obstruction. He doesn't want to do a CT scan yet since I have had 4 and X rays and wants to avoid too much radiation. So for the next 5-6 days am on liquids only. I am praying and hoping this clears up as I think an obstruction may mean another surgery. I can only imagine what my insurance thinks as I am over $75,000 in hospital expenses and not even Dr. bills yet. I am mostly covered except for about $5000 for deductible and co insurance. Don't know how I will pay that but have applied for aid. Its bad enough to be sick and have to have such bills hanging over your head. And now I can't even work, even if I could find a job which of course I can't. I am starting to feel pretty down again when I was just feeling good again. Please reply, I think hearing from anyone would give me a morale boost.
To Damagedgoods, I saw your post and that you have had colon surgery and I was wondering if you could give me any insight into your experience and what I might do to help myself. Talking to someone in a similar situation would be a help.
Again, thanks for all your support in the past and I hope that I will get some messages from you - I really need all your support.

Hi Aurora,
So sorry you are feeling down right now.  It's perfectly understandable, of course.  You are run down physically & I'm sure it must be hard to try to feel good emotionally when you are so sick.  I wish I could offer you some advice, but I don't really know what to say.
The only thing I can offer is to remind you that you mad it through so many really difficult experiences.  In spite of all that, you have still managed to have some positive days.  You have a beautiful son (if I remember correctly) & so much going for you.  The job market is really tough right now, but it is improving.  They just released numbers that temp jobs were up 21% last month.  I know the place where I am temping is bringing on more temporary workers for the next 5-8 months.  Right now you need to focus on getting well.  But I really believe that once you are healed, the timing will be right to find some sort of work.
Also, in my experience, hospitals & doctors are really nice about working with patients.  I hope you can get the majority of your bill covered by charity care, but whatever isn't cover, just talk with the provider & explain your situation.  I have one bill I pay $5/month on & another provider I send $10/month to.  A third provider where I have had a bill outstanding for a long time has agree to wait for any money until I get a job & then to come up with a payment plan with me -- even $1/month he said would be okay.
Sorry, I wish I could say more.  But I do pray that everything would start to come together for you.  You have been so strong & I am really amazed to see you really grow over the past year or so since I started on HW.  You have been an encouragement to me to make changes in my own life to build a future for myself, rather than getting mired in the past or overcome with worries in the present.
take care,

getting by

Hi Karen, just saw your shout out to me and posted a reply. Thank you so much for taking the time to think of me. I know how busy you are at this time of year and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know you are thinking of me. I wish you well with all your wonderful projects.

Frances, you are such a dear and your words are very comforting. You do know just what to say to help me. Knowing that you care and respond to me is very helpful and uplifting to me. You are so strong and I truly hope things are working well for you. I will be filling out financial papers so I can get payment plans set up. I just need that darn hospital to realize that I have other living expenses to pay and I have to buy food and have the basics to exist. So i'm hoping for the  best outcome. Thanks again to you both for replying and caring about me.

I'm sorry you're going through a rough time with all the health issues and expenses, Aurora. You can handle this know because you are strong. Hang in there.

I've had 2 bowel resections, and have developed adhesions and gotten bowel obstructions as well. Not all bowel obstructions require surgery though. It is possible for your bowels to be partially obstructed, or narrowed at the surgery site, and sometimes they clear up being on clear liquids.

Just thought I'd throw that out so you know. Hopefully the next couple days of clear liquids will do you well, and you'll be again on your way to healing.

Good luck, and keep your head up. I know how overwhelming it can be to have surgery or health issues and worry about the money. It's only money though, and like Frances said, most hospitals will work with you. As long as you're paying something, they are usually understanding.

Nightwish, Jamiee, Becky, thank you for your support. It means so much to me. It is so easy to get down when you are sick. Friends here have been great bringing dinner, flowers, taking me to dr. appts. But you all are my special friends, each and everyone who takes the time to write me and give such support and encouragement. I am truly grateful.

Jamiee, hang in. I know how diffiicult it is for you now but you have been through much and you are a survivor. Yes, I know how hard it is to have the bills but as the expression goes "you can't squeeze blood from a turnip" so you will just do what you can. Much love to you sweet friend.

Becky, thank you for your reply and letting me know more about bowel obstructions.  I am getting better. It seems my system is working again, had diaharrea for a while but am getting back to normal and eating some solid food now without problems. Will see my dr. in 2 weeks so will know more then but right now I think I must have had a bad stomach bug. I am really getting the water down as that is supposed to help flush the system better. Boy, I am drowning in water but I will do what it takes. I hope I reach the point where I won't have to worry about bowel obstructions but I guess that is something that goes with this type of surgery. I am going to be so careful with my diet. Love and many hugs to you too Becky and to you too Nightwish.

Hello Aurora:  I'm sorry that I haven't been in sooner to post or chat with you.  Life has been a little more hectic lately, and for some reason my system keeps preventing me from coming on/staying on this website smhair .  Anyways, I am sorry that you have had so many ups and downs.  Being sick or recovering from surgery must be hard enough on its own and adding in depression must make it ten times worst.
I am glad that you have friends that can come visit you and bring you food and visit for awhile.  I know that you will always have us online (as we are one family smilewinkgrin ) but knowing someone can be there if you physically need them must give you some security as well.  I am sending you best wishes and lots and lots of (((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))) your way.  Keep up drinking your water and feel better!

Hi Cass! I was so happy to hear from you. Haven't seen you on HW for a while and was wondering about you.  I know you are having your share of difficulties and I do hope and pray that all will get better for you. You are such a dear friend and I want us always to be in touch. Thank you so much for your well wishes. I think I am finally starting to improve. It's a long haul but then I have to drastically change all my diet to stay healthy. But I would rather do that than go through this horrible surgery with all its complications. I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and hope your children are well.  Take good care of yourself, Cass, you are always in my thoughts.

Gentle hugs,
