Thank you to the people who replied to my last post... (in future Ill avoid talking about self harm...) :-)

I want to stop it because i know its not "rational." The few friends of mine who know about it keep telling me to stop, and for them I agreed to try... I just cant... but anyway... that doesnt really matter.

I have another question... does talking actually help?

walking at night sounds fun, but its soo cold at the moment!! Unless of course youre in the northern hemisphere, in which case I am jealous, and would gladly swap places with you.
I think I will start painting again.

I paint too. Havent done it in a long time. I am a surrealist. Love to use a lot of black in my work. I am going to try to paint a birdhouse. With lots of bright colors. Will see how it turns out. I usually paint on canvas. What type of things do you like to paint. Do you use acrylics or oils, or water colors? I have tried all but like acrylics the best.

Best wishes to you. Let us know how your painting goes.

Hugs, Karen

U-S,

It is great to see you back!!!

Talking is an individual thing, I agree, it must help in someway, as it does help many people, it does nothing for me though. There are simply not enough words, not enough time for me to say all that is within, all that has happened, all that is going on.

So I don't, and I just try to deal with things as best as I can.

Most will say talking helps, for me, if I am upset, I stop talking, if I am going through something, I never say until I have been able to calm down, and process it in my head.

I posted to another member about DBT. I'm not sure what country you're in. I'm pretty sure they have DBT in Australia & know they have it in many countries around the world.

DBT is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy & was created for people struggling with self-harm. It focuses on changing the behavior, even if the thoughts persist. There is such a mysterious connection between our thoughts, feelings, actions & words. But many times working on one of those areas will eventually bring peace to the others.

For me, I know talking about things tends to make them worse. I do better when I focus on specific concrete things I can change. But for others, they need to be able to get their thoughts and feelings out and have a safe person to process them with. Only you can determine what is the right treatment for you (and that may mean trial & error for a while) but there are people out there who can & want to help. And many people have found safer ways to manage their stressful times.

Here's some information about DBT if you're interested: behavioraltech.org/resources/whatisdbt.cfm.

peace,
frances

Im in Australia too; this winter has been so cold! I am sitting in front of the fire now, with my dog sleeping next to me (which would be ok, but he smells!!).

Karen, I paint mainly with oils. I also like to use a lot of black in my paintings (as in chiaroscuro). My interest in art is mainly in renaissance and baroque paintings, and most of the subjects I paint are similar to those done at that time. Most recently I did a painting of "the suicide of lucretia," but only because a friend wanted me to. I want to do something more cheery!! Any ideas?

Thanks again.

My work is a lot like Salvidor Dali. When I want to paint something cheery, I do flowers. Not as good at them as a lot of things. I useually paint wolves and tigers. That is what I enjoy. I have one that is a wolf in the dark looking through the wheat grass. It looks so cool. You sound like a very good artist. Maybe we could show eachother our work. Email me if you want.
