I am 20 years old and was put on zoloft for school anxiety. I began on 12.5 mg, then was upped to 20 mg and was doing just fine. Suddenly, because my doctor realized I was doing so well, she upped me to 50 mg! Well, although I was feeling better mentally, I now have went from 132 pounds- 152 pounds--> TWENTY POUND INCREASE FROM THIS DRUG!! I was on the drug for 11 months and stopped it a month ago. Im now depressed about the weight gain and I am doing everything and anything possible to try and lose it. If anyone can please share their experience with me and tell me how long it took them to shed the weight they gained from the drug, that would be great.
Thanks,
Donna

Hi Donna!

Welcome to the HealingWell Depression forum. I am so glad that you have joined us. I am sorry about the weight gain. Makes you wish the doctor would have just left it alone.

I know that it takes time to get the weight off that we acquire from anti depressants. Besides you don't want to lose it too fast, it comes back faster if you do. I didn't have trouble with weight gain from Zoloft, in fact it was the opposite. But a lot of people gain weight from this drug.

I remcommend proper diet with plenty of exercise. Walking helps a lot. I am sure soon you will start to see your weight go down, but keep in mind that muscle weighs four times that of body fat, so go by how your clothes fit you instead of weight on the scale if you are working out.

Good luck to you.

Hugs, Karen

I've gained a TON of wt. It is very uncomfortable. I lost 20 kind of fast, it didn't even show, and like she said 8 came back real fast too. My husband just lost 50 lbs in about 9 mos since he had a heart attack. He bought a calorie book at Walmart, it tells about fastfood, everything. Shocking. I figured that my lower cal lunch at Burger KIng was smart. Sm. cheeseburger, sm fries, sm shake - around 900 cals. Not good. Knowing that is very useful. Panda Express? OMG, everything is half fat cals. Check that out. How he did it was to measure or weigh everything. Amazing how small a portion is supposed to be. Counted his cals for every meal so he would know what he had left for the day. Shot for 400 cal/meal. Really had to cut down on meat portions, go to lean, and eats wild Salmon 3 x/wk. Lots of fruit and veg, especially carrots and cucumbers, very low cals.
You can do this too. You only have 20 to lose, and you're young. Get some exercise, my downfall, even if its walking faster than usual. A quick walk around the block before bed feels great. Good luck.

I don't know about others but I tried to get off it and gain 10 lbs each time I get off it.  It's a crazy drug, which I am still on :(  No solution for you, just know how you feel.
