Has anyone ever looked in the mirror and had the feeling they didn't recognize themselves?  IOW - who is that looking back at me?

I've had that experience - not often, just now and then - maybe 2 or 4 times a year at most, but have had the experience for a long time.  Kind of shocking when it does happen.   Disturbing too.

I'm wondering if the feeling is tied to depression or is it something "everyone" experiences at some point.  Don't know what brought it into my thoughts tonight, but I've never told anyone about it before.

Yes, me too. Don't know if its depression or something everybody goes thru. In my case because my looks are deteriorating with age, I've gained so much weight, low-self-esteem. Got a picture in the mail for my birthday, cute with my son, about 25 yrs ago. If I didn't recognize the sweatshirt I was wearing, I wouldn't have believed it was me.
I look away from mirrors automatically, and get very uncomfortble seeing my reflection unexpectedly in glass reflection.
Like Jamie's comments, both ! Something to consider.

I don't look in mirrors, or if I do, only at the part I am working on, ie, if putting on eye makeup.
