When I was younger, my parents told me I was not intelligent and use to compare me to other people, that has dented my confidence.  I believe that I am not intelligent and always struggle with my academic work. I studied nursing, I messed up a lot when doing practicals and was suspended a couple of times regarding that.
                   How can I regain my confidence? I want to go back to school and study a different course.

Hi Abie,

Welcome to the HealingWell Depression forum. You are not stupid or worthless. It sounds like you are trying too hard. We often do that. We get nervous when doing things and over think them or try too hard. Try to relax.

Are you going to any type of counseling? It really helps. Especially when your family said things to bring you down. This tends to stick with us and it takes a lot of work to get rid of these negative thoughts. The same goes for good things. You could write some affirmation notes around the house, like "I am a good person", "I can do this", "I am special". Eventually you believe these things, just like you believed the bad things.

I hope that this helps some. Try to see a counselor, keep posting here. There are a lot of wonderful, kind members here who would like to try and help you.

Take care.

Hugs, Karen

hi abie, agree with karen regarding counselling. maybe a chat with your uni co-ordinator is warranted. uni is tough on it's own, thus finding some support is crucial. you have been brave in posting, keep doing so and seek some support. with compassion, jamie.

Hello Abie,

I have similar problems with self esteem and feelings of worthlessness - its all the old records playing in your head. Try to change the record. I use this one;

'I may not be perfect but in all the world, there's no one better at being me than ME'

Keep your chin up.
