My doc has prescribed Cymbalta 30mg for me to start taking for depression. I know its different from Prozac, but I am concerned about having a negative reaction to it. I took Prozac years ago for severe PMS (guess its now called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder PMDD)--I would take it on day 14 of my menstrual cycle to reduce the moodiness, depression and agitation associated w/ my periods. Anyways, I tried the Prozac for two cycles but stopped b/c I had an extreme increase in depressive mood and became very angry. It scared the heck out of me!! Since then, the thought of starting an antidepressant is very frightening to me, although my doc says Cymbalta works differently than Prozac. I am dealing w/ an oppositional teenager and it has taken its toll on me. I feel that if I don't do something to 'lift' my depression/anxiety, it will only continue to feed the opposition in my daughter. Thoughts anyone?? thnx :)

Cymbalta is quite different from prozac, so I would try it. Trust the doctor and give it a try. There are many different antidepressants and if this one doesn't work out, you can still try another one. And the doctor probably already knows that this should work better than the other. If you don't trust him, how about a psychiatrist? You could let him know what happened and let him decide what to do. That would be another option. Or go med free and try counseling. Counseling gets to the root of the problems and teaches us how to think and be happy. It might be the way to go. But I think your doctor might have to hook you up with a counselor, not sure. So you may have to tell him your plan. Be as open and honest with the doctor as you can. They need to know everything in order to be able to treat you in the proper manor.

I hope all works out well for you. And I forgot to welcome you to the forum. I hope taht you continue to post and we hope to be ablle to offer support.

Hugs, Karen
