Everybody is okay here, but I had a fire to one of my main buildings and am lacking electricity right now.  I am on a generator, so I wont be on line much.  Kitt (a very special lady) has said she would pop in now and then for me.  But if you, as members see anything against the rules or anything like that, don't hesitate to send an admin alert to help Kitt.  I trust this forum will go smoothly until I am up and running again.  You are all wonderful members.

Hey guys,

We got power on last night about 11:00. Yippy!!! No more generator. I want to thank all of you for your kind responses. I am taking a week off from the project and then start cleaning all my stuff that got smoke damage. Time to get out in the woods and look for mushrooms. Wish me luck on finding them.

Hugs to all, Karen

Thanks Jamie,

Hubby went out and found a few today. Not a lot, but they are starting. We had a cold April and I think that slowed them down.

Gettingby, I know it's late to ask, but did you get the clean-up job following the fire done to your satisfaction?

Have you made a decision yet about whether you want to move to another area closer to your grandchildren and children?

I hope it's all good now.

I.G.

We have gotten the building cleaned up. Getting ready for Kilz. Then drywall. I still have to go through all my artwork and my glassware and clean it up. I am thinking about selling it at a garage sale. A lot of it is antique. I am scared to look at my paintings. I have a dry sponge to try to clean them with. My cousine got them for me and said if they don't wotk, she has another idea. She brought me wood paste for the vanity I had. It wasn't really badly ruined so I think I can clean it up and re finish it. I don't know. I just know I keep putting this off. I have to start soon. I don't think we are moving. The appartment that we were considering was too small. And no windows in it hardly. I have to be able to see outside. They have a house that we could rent, but I own my home and can't see having a house payment. So here we will stay. I think. I love it here. I have woods behind me and town to the north where I can walk to if I have to so it is convenient here. My husband just doesn't like the town. But nowhere is perfect I say. Thanks for asking.

Hugs, Karen

I think you made a wise decision. You will always be able to see your children and grandchildren when it's convenient for you and your husband. I know that cleaning up from a fire must be something else!

about your paintings: my art teacher told me always to clean my oil paintings by dipping a soft, white cloth in a little ivory soap and water solution and gently clean the painting. Then use a clean, white, damp soft cloth to wipe the excess  from the painting carefully and permit the painting to dry. You rarely need to do that, but when you've had a fire, it probably would be best to give them a good, gentle cleaning if there is a smoke discoloration.

I feel sure you know about the best way to clean yours, but I remembered at the moment what my teacher told me to do about mine--that's oils, not acrylics or water colors or pastels!!

After it dries, if the brightness needs to be brought back, you may always coat it again with a light semi-gloss or gloss coating for oil paintings. They should be just like new. Please be encouraged about their being in great shape when you're finished.

Thanks for sharing the plans. I've wondered what you decided.

My daughter called last night and asked me to "fire up the sewing machine". She and her family are not far away, so it's very easy for her just to call when she wants something for my precious grandchildren.  Needless to say, she knows nothing about sewing and could care less! Love her, though.

Take care.

Thanks IG,

I do use acrylics. Some of my work was finnished and had a matte varnish on them, I think that they will fare better than the unfinished works. I need to start painting again, though I paint mainly when I am depressed and haven't been all that depressed as of late. I guess I shouldn't complain about that. But I so wish I could get inspired to work some more on the unfinished ones, or start a new one. I haven't painted in a few years now. I miss it. But if I am not in the mood, I can't do it.
I didn't realize that you painted in oils. What kind of things do you like to paint? I have done some landscapes, but not very good at it. I am more of a surrealist. I like painting wolves and tigers and stuff like that. I don't consider myself all that great, but others do. I guess we are our own worst critic at times.

Thanks again for the advice. I am anxious to see how the dry erasers work. She has another method if they don't. But some of the paintings are completely black from soot and creasote (sp). But this week I want to try them and see if they are going to work.

I hope that you are having a nice Sunday. The sun is out here, a little windy so it is a little chilly, but not bad. I don't even know what shape my sewing machine is in. That is the old singer that is in a table. I hope that they didn't throw it out. I will have to looke for it. We put everything into one of the greenhouses. So I will go out there and look for it. I think of more things every day that I wonder if they made it. I know it sounds stupid that I don't know the condition of things. I guess I am just scared to look.

Take care,

Hugs, Karen

Mine are all still life paintings, Karen,

I wouldn't be surprised if the ivory solution wouldn't work on acrylics. I wouldn't attempt it though until I had talked to a framing shop that has a trained artist on its staff. The dry erasers might do. You never know. But don't lose your paintings, please, until you have found just
the thing to bring them back.

I had a frame shop who had a trained artist clean a pastel for me that
was done when my sister and I were very young. She restored the flaked pastel on the paper beautifully. Call a local university art department if you don't get the solution at home that works. Your
grandchildren will love them, truly, as all your family do now.

I feel sure your sewing machine can be restored, too, by refinishing if
necessary. Boy, what a job ahead! One day at a time, for sure on that project.

There is a publication (book form) called "From Darkness to Sunlight"
which is the history and pictures of the paintings of a group of bipolar patients.  If you ever have a chance to purchase it, please do.  I can
spend hours looking at the artwork and go back again and again and find something new in each painting.  (There's one of a panther that is hauntingly beautiful, though fierce.)  Some of the women have beautfiul paintings in various media; their life stories are very interesting, too.  Many had breakdowns and then began to paint!

Take care.

I.G.
