Hi

I am usually hanging out on the Ulcerative Colitis board, but my child is now depressed from taking Prednisone (steroids) for so long, so I guess I get to hang out with you guys, too! scool

My daughter has been on 25 mg of Elavil, which studies show can help with pain from colits. She started taking it in December.  Since then, she has been on steroids for colits flares - she is definately depressed & having anxiety issues.  I'm really scared to put her on certain meds...the one that have the warnings "Maybe increase sucidial thoughts in children" cry   I just wanted to get an idea of what meds you all have had experience with.  First we have to FIND a child psychiatrist....I have made 17 phone calls today and cannot find anyone with openings before August 10th.  I really hate to let her suffer that long :(

Take the soonest appointment that you can get. It may be worth the wait. Maybe you could get her into counseling (If she isn't already) until that appointment gets here. That really isn't that far off, though it can seem like a lifetime for a teen.

I am sorry to hear that your daughter has UC. It must be kind of traumatic for her to have to deal with it especially at such a young age. I imagine that it really puts a damper on her life. I hope that the meds can keep it under control.

Do keep posting. This is really a great forum. Though it has been slow lately. Maybe the weather has something to do with it. People are probably at the lake and on vacations. I hope that things work out for you. That is a lot of phone calls to make to try to get an appointment. You must be getting rather frustrated. Don't give up. One day at a time.

Hugs, Karen

I can empathize with you. My 14 yr old daughter who has Crohn's and other mental health issues, with one being depression, has had a hard time the last few months. We are on wait lists every where. I've also had to have Community Resource Team come into my home because she was talking suicide and cutting herself. I found calling a parents helpline and a distress centre to give me guidance and to just keep me sane has helped a lot. Is there anything like that available where you live?

We haven't tried any meds yet, but I'm hoping once we get in to see someone that maybe they will give her something in conjunction with therapy to help get her through this. She did have a psychiatrist, but because he's a male she won't see him...there are mitigating circumstances with that.

I hope your daughter starts to feel better soon, physically and mentally! And I hope you are doing well too!!

I got out the phone book and called 10 more doctors...I got a call back from one who has a cancellation tomorrow! What a relief ...now I just have to hope that she likes him!

Sami's mom: does your daughter only want to see a female Dr? You can email me if you want to..sounds like we can help each other out!_
