well the other job fell through as no client so i applied at several places and landed a job at walmart for cashier. it pays 7.9 an hour which is good for parttime and i can move up. my uniform is a blue shirt and tan khaki pants so its comfy clothes. i will be tired but it will bring in extra money so it will be worth it. i applied at krogers and had an interview and the lady wanted me to go part time their and parttime at my current job until i earned fulltime at krogers and i couldnt. i need the fulltime and parttime job right now. she was like "arent you ready to get out of fast food and work at a real job" so i guess my current job is fake and i make a fake check too. oh well i didnt like her but walmart seems cool. the guy at the service desk seemed excited to have me as a cashier.

Congrats on the new job! Retail stores are easy to move up in quickly due to high turnover, so I wish you luck. At least you don't have to worry about Walmarts shutting down due to the economy.

That was really rude of that person to make that comment about working a real job...every job that requires work is real, even if it is unpaid (internships, work around the house, etc.).

Wal Mart can be a decent place to work. My only advice about working there is think twice before taking on any kind of management role. They simply expect way too much out of any kind of manager, and the pay is not worth all the BS the company puts them through. I know I worked for Wal Mart for almost 5 years and in that time I went from a night stocker to an assistant manager.

The company treats it's hourly employees pretty decent though. Just go with the flow and you will probably actually enjoy the job a lot. I know I did when I was an hourly employee.

i am almost betting it is just the same as fast food, cant suck any worse nor treat any worse. im tired of fast food, it is not worth the bs. i want to be able to try something different for a change. i am really nervous about working there, i hope they like me. im waiting to see how my boss at my primary job is going to like how i cant stay later any more.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is to shine in retail...I work in HR at a department store and it is so difficult to find reliable workers. Just showing up when you are scheduled makes a huge difference! And if you do your job and get credit (not sure how pushy Walmart is about their credit card), they will love you. I'm sure you'll do fine. Just have fun with it. Some customers are really great and like to chat with you. Then you get those "other" customers that you'd rather not meet...but don't let them get to you. Just keep smiling and you'll get smiles in return.

Be nice to the customers, treat everyone with respect, even those and especially those who may not deserve it and you will do great.

What a lot of people fail to understand or appreciate is how important a cashier is when it comes to customer service and the shopping experience. The cashier is the last store employee a customer deals with when they shop and the last real opportunity to make a good impression for the store.

Every where I shop I have my favorite cashiers as well as those I don't want to deal with. I will stand in a longer line to see the good ones and avoid the bad ones, and it has nothing to do with how fast they are able to ring up my purchases and everything to do with how they treat me and other customers.

When I worked retail the favorite part of my job was interacting with the customers. It made me feel great to do whatever I could to make their day a little better.

I worked at a convenience store/gas station some and I loved it. I learned to like my special customers and saw people thast I hadn't seen in a long time. It was fun. I liked having my own money too and contributing to the household.

I hope that this new job works out for you. Must be exciting to start it.

Good luck,

Hugs, Karen

it is karen exciting and nervewrecking to. i know my boss is going to hate me not being so available right now too lol. jim i agree with you on customer service. i love talking to people so i will make small talk with every guest. i been told i have excellent customer service skills. i do get frustrated at my current job but that is because i am soooo burnt out from fast food. i dont even get time to really talk to the guests that much. the hardest part for me, which i didnt disclose to walmart, is my ADD and standing in the same spot all day long. sometimes that is hard for me but i can do it as long as i have interaction with people. i have been hearing good and bad things about walmart. one of their cashiers there dont seem to like her job very well but the other employees dont seem bothered and even seems happy. one of my friends says it will be hell come christmas time and that i will hate it while another friend says im going to love my job. to me its a paycheck and a chance to meet new people. i will be getting paid to talk to people and that is perfect for me.

Christmas time can be crazy, but your shifts will fly by because you will be very busy. That will probably help with your ADD. If you do have some down time after the holidays and don't enjoy cashiering, maybe you could talk to your manager about other positions in the store.

A lot of people in retail are there just for the paycheck and are not good with people, so take negative comments with a grain of salt. If you are a people-person you will probably enjoy it and do well.
