Good to be back, gang!  Thanks for the welcomes.

Hope your holiday went better than mine!

I forgot that I'd put a stick of butter in the oven and turned it on to start dinner.  WELL, returning to the kitchen couldn't see my hand in front of my face... just a white cloud filled the room.

THEN the smoke alarm went on...
THEN I screamed... OMG, OMG,OMG
THEN my husband in the next room said...what's wrong?
THEN my family arrived at the door, (what timing)
THEN we opened all the doors and windows.

Everybody had a good laugh, (except me). That will be a day long remembered.

What happened to you folks?????

We've got an extra cane here for you. Only semi-decent, tho... so won't bother shipping. (hope yours turns up)

I give thanks you are safe and sound, I would have said more than OMG, lol. Did dinner work out in the end? Sorry, but I would have had to join your family with laughing, things like that are funny to everyone except the person it is happening to.

I am glad you had friends to spend the day with Jamiee, sorry bout your cane though

Awty,
Dinner (as expected) was a LITTLE late being ready. Guess it was ok...didn't eat much myself.

Our Christmas tradition is to serve what is known as "Grandpa's Favorite' (my Dad). It's a baked pork in tomato sauce recipe... and I've been having a problem with pork chops being tough recently. Anybody else? Or suggestions?

This is a great thread Joyce,

We had a quiet dinner, people did pop in and out. Many phone calls. It was nice.

I hope you all are having a great day.

Can you add a little liquid to the dish when you bake them Grandma J? To be honest, I don't even know how to cook a sausage, I don't eat meat, I only cook vegetarian. But I think I can remember someone doing that with chops?

Glad you had a great Xmas Lil Ole Karen

I already bake them in a mixture of tomato soup, green olives with liquid, peas and onions. I might have to cook longer (or less)

My son became a vegetarian years ago after I served a meal of rock cornish game hen. When did you decide?

When I left home at 14.5. I didn't eat any meat, fish or chicken for seven years. But I was constantly having to get iron injections. Now I eat meat if I visit someone, or if I am at work, but at home I have none in the house and apart from cooking Indian food, I have no idea what to do with meat. I still don't get enough meat in me to provide for my iron needs, but once a week is about as much as I can cope with.

Not much to report here, this morning...except my cat has a cold?'

I won't touch liver Karen,

Love beets, hate rasians, lol. I eat alot of spinach and get protien via chick peas, kidney, turtle, refried beans and lentils. Yes, I can take the tablets, but I don't seem to obsorb enough of the iron through the tablets. Mostly I only eat meat at others places to be polite and not a bother to cook for, but most of my friends know enough recipies that are meat free to cater for me.

And speaking of food, I am so excited, mid Feb I have booked a massive trip and tonight just finalized a few things. Now just travel insurance and injections and Visas to apply for. I can't wait to eat authentic Indian food.

First I fly to Brunei, then onto Bali, then India, over night in Singapore before coming home at the end of March. Huge trip to plan without a travel agent, just hope no extra nasty surprises. Already had one flight that I had booked changed by the airline, and they charge me for thier muckup.

Well, another big thing for me to look forward to, this will keep me balanced for a few months.

And.........off course in India I will ride on an elephant for a day

When I was in my teens the house we lived in had a smoke alarm on the ceiling in the hall just outside the kitchen. Between the air currents in the house and this thing being overly sensitive 98% of the time it would go off when my Mom was almost done cooking dinner.

From then on the family joke was "Dinners ready" every time we would hear a smoke alarm going off.

This was a regular occurrence even after we moved into a different house any time my Mom made either fried pork chops or fried chicken. They were very tasty but she could never keep them from smoking enough to set off a smoke alarm.

Just thought I would share that as PA G-Ma's mention of the alarm going off brought back that memory.

Since we will be going to the in-laws this coming Saturday for "Christmas" and they are serving both ham and turkey I elected to make a lasagna and garlic bread for our Christmas day meal.

Everything turn out very well. The lasagna was not soupy at all (thank you oven ready pasta) and the bread was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The only thing that went wrong was when I put my 6 year old's piece in the freezer to cool it off. For some reason the plate slid and flipped over into the ice bin ruining almost and entire bucket of ice. Fortunately I had already filled all the glasses before than happened.

Jim... it's such fun to read about stuff that happens to others, and know I'm not 'alone'.

The very first meal when we moved to this new house five years ago set of the smoke alarm, too.  At least then, we were alone!

Sure wish they made one that was less 'sensitive' so we could 'broil' again.  Dinner's ready (that's going to be added to my announcement list, now)

Hey Grandma Joyce!

This Christmas, I drove 2.5 hours out of my way so that my grandmother could be with us for Christmas. It was exhausting, but well worth her being there to experience everything. She is getting older and it's hard for her to ride in the car so long.

For those of you who didn't know, I don't cook often. I don't think I'm a poor chef, it's just hard to only cook for one person! My brother gave me "Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible" for Christmas and I also got a crock pot... so if you have some great recipes an inexperienced gal could handle, I'd greatly appreciate it :)

I like this thread a lot... it's a nice break from thinking about what's in my head and on my desk lol.

Good morning... December 28th already!  I used to take Christmas decorations down after January 1st... but think I'll start on that today.

Not much happening here except a big thump on the roof last night.  No, it wasn't Santa and Blitzen...just a good size branch fell on the house.  Startled all of us.  Will have to wait for daylight to see if there was any damage.

Awty, WHAT made you plan a trip to India?  Are you going alone?  Have you done much traveling?  The only thing I know about you is that you're from New Zealand.

Very impressed that you're planning this trip.  We've done some ourselves, and it's not easy.  Have only been to Italy and France.  Would like to have seen the Pyramids... that was on my 'bucket list', however that's now on 'hold'.

greenbean, I enjoyed reading your post.  Good girl to drive your grandmother!  My granddaughter is in the middle of getting her license, so think I'll let her practice a bit first!

I understand about cooking for one.  Earlier in our marriage my husband might be away on business for a week or more.  Then I would make 'something' (meatloaf or fruit salad)... and eat it the same thing every day. ugh.  I'll give some thought today and see if I can come up with any suggestions.

Just a side note... your 'user name' makes me smile.  There's a stray orange tabby that has taken a liking to my son.  He showed his two daughters a picture and asked them to come up with a name.  One of them picked the name  'Greenbean'.

Come on gang... what's up?

Well the sun is out this morning but it is 0 degrees. Cold one here. I plan on making some baked beans for a funeral. I didn't know the person but the township called me and asked if I could make a dish to pass. So that is it. I have to go to town and get everything. So that is my project for today. Plus do a little more shopping too. Fun... not... lol...

I hope all of you have a great day.

Keep us posted on everything. This is a fun thread.

I'm glad everyone likes my name :) It comes from a bunch of different things... I like greenbeans, I'm fairly tall & thin, and when I was younger and volunteered in a soup kitchen, that's what everyone called me! I was in charge of opening the huge cans of greenbeans so they would make jokes about how I looked like a greenbean and handled them well lol

I woke up a little excited today because once a week I have been meeting with a friend and her boyfriend for dinner. I bring my dog, Carter, to play with her dog while we chat and get dinner ready. She is giving me some lessons and I really enjoy the company. Well, today is our date for the week! Tomorrow, another friend is coming back into town from her Christmas break at home so I will meet up with her. Friday, I will most likely either head out of town for the weekend (like usual) or have a girl's night. I was invited to the girl's night by my friend/boss for my weekend job. I don't know anyone going, but I figured that it may be good to go and meet some gals since I know they will be local. If anything, it will push me to get outside of my box.

Saturday I may go hunting for the first time. Either way, I will NOT be in town. I will probably just have a quiet night with my friend's family at their house. This friend is the one who works for my therapist. You may remember I felt uncomfortable because I felt like she knew too much about my sessions. Well, that issue has been resolved, so everything is back on track with the friendship. Her family is very welcoming, supportive & kind to me so I like to visit them often, usually once a week.

I met a guy about two months ago that lives in the apartment building next to me. We talk fairly often and yesterday he mentioned getting dinner tonight... I'm not set on this happening, as I already had plans anyway and I don't want to come across as wanting anything more than a friendship with him. But, it would be exciting to get to know him better so that I had more friends here.

I feel overwhelmed with work right now, but the attorney did tell me that I do really good work "when I'm here" and started laughing. That's his way of paying a compliment. He was annoyed we all showed up late this am but hey, the car windows were iced!!!

Nothing too new going on today... 40 degrees when I got up this am, which is getting "cold" for Louisiana. Can't wait for those recipes :) I think we are making potato soup tonight??

Hope everyone is having a good day,

Courtney

Courtney,

I am so happy for you as it seems that things are coming around and you sound so happy. What do you hunt? I use to deer hunt and small game hunt. Haven't done it in years. I use to fish too. Loved it!!! I like bluegills. They are so good. Fresh and yummy.

It was 0 here this morning. But I am in Michigan. It is sunny today. I went to town, it was nice. My girlfriend went with me. I have a friend now that I see quite often. She doesn't have any friends around here and we have gotten rather close. It is nice. I have a few friends now. I have always been such a loner. Never really hung out with other women much.

I hoope that you are having a good day. Thanks for posting, it made me really happy to read all that you have been doing. I hope that the potatoe soup turns out yummy. Let us know.

Hugs, Karen

please forgive me if I selfishly don't acknowledge previous posts. I;m just shaking so much i need to express my sadness and get past the jpain i've done to my poor cat

He needs a skin treatment everymonth and it burns him. i have to do it even though for awhile he runs and hides and hates me. Put it off till after christmas, then yesterday it rained and today he didn't feel like lap sitting.

i've been carrying around the little vial of liquid everywhere i go and finally he sat while i was sending hugs on another thread.

He's outside now. I'm breathing easier. think I'll take a walk myself.
