Just got Xanax yesterday, .25mg. I am supposed to take half a pill twice a day when needed. As I understand it, it should kick in pretty quickly, correct?

I took a dose last night, nothing. Dose this am... nothing. I was just wondering exactly what differences I should feel because I don't feel any just yet.

Hi Greenbean885,

I don't know what you are taking Xanax for (it's usually prescribed as an anti-anxiety med, but as you are posting in depression, it could be for some other reason). A starting dose is usually 0.25mg not cut in half, but I have to assume your doc knows what he/she is doing. It usually does kick in pretty quickly (although it won't stay in your system for very long).

It should leave you feeling less anxious and give you a sense of calm (albeit a fake one). It could also make you somnolent depending on the dose. If I had to guess, either the dose is not strong enough to do whatever it's prescribed for, or you should be on a different med.

At any rate, you should go back and talk to your doctor. It isn't like an SSRI where the effects take weeks to present themselves, if it were doing something, you would know.

Best of luck,

Sorry, I usually post in depression and I know some people in this forum are also on the meds along with other things. I am on Paxil for OCD and Xanax for anxiety... there's no OCD forum and I started posting here when I was very down.

Thanks for the advice. I will give it a couple days and then call into her office?

It does sound like you aren't on a strong enough dose. What milligram did she put you on? It is most likely a .25 and that is a pretty low dose. I am just assuming. Yes, talk to her and let her know that it isn't doing anything for you. I am sure that she will increase the dosage.

I take xanax too and it really helps with the anxiety. I rarely have it anymore. And if I do, I take a dose. I am suppose to take three a day, but usually only take two. Unless I am more anxious. I have been on it for a long time. At one period I was taking 4 mg a day, now I take one and a half.

Yes, talk to the doctor who prescribed this for you, but don't get upset with the doc for trying this med at a really low dose. Personally I think your doc is going about it the right way in working the way up to a dose that will help you instead of starting high or in the middle and working down which I have seen too many do.

I've taken Xanax in the past for my anxiety...for me, I needed at least .25.... .50 was what had the best immediate effect.
When it's working you'll likely just feel really relaxed, kind of spacey or sleepy. Talk to you doctor about upping the dose if you don't feel anything, and let us know what happens. Good luck <3

Thanks everyone!

I agree that starting with the smallest does is safest, but it probably does need to be increased to have any effect. I will call next week if I still don't find relief from the dose she prescribed.

Yeah, that is an extremely tiny dose. I take .5 mg as needed. I tried a .25 mg pill once and it did absolutely nothing; I can't imagine that half that dose would do anything to anyone. Xanax works great for me but it does make me sleepy about an hour after I take it so I can't really take it at work. It got me through several airplane trips and I am extremely claustrophobic and almost didn't accept a job because they were going to make me fly. Hope it works for you!
