Mindfulness was not a term I was familiar with when I was diagnosed with chronic illness 17 years ago. Looking back, I wish I had known more about how to practice it in my life. It would have saved me a lot of worry, distress, and hopelessness. I've since learned that mindfulness is a set of skills for healing, intuition, insight, calmness, focus, resilience, and hope that you can use to counter the inevitable adversity of chronic illness.

Thank you Peter.

I believe that mindfulness plays a big part in fighting depression and other chronic illnesses. I practice it daily. It took me a long time to become successful at it, but with daily practice, it can happen. Keeps me from worrying about things that I have no control over. Thank you again for sharing...

So glad it helps you. I'm no expert but I follow a number of books, blogs and listen to meditation tracks that help. Hoping to become more regular at it so I'm more resilient when things get tough :)

My chronic illness (fibromyalgia and depression) kind of taught me to live one day at a time, from then it was one moment. But I never knew how I was going to feel from one moment to the next so I learned to accept that and go with the flow of life. It is really very simple, but becomes complex in our minds. We all have the skills, it is just tuning in. Practicing is doing it...

Dear Peter,

I'm not sure that I have had the pleasure of meeting you? I just wanted to say thank you for your post. It was very uplifting, and reassured me of my own faith. I am fairly new to this forum and have to tell you that it has been a God send for me. I have been through many trials in my life and have faced them "head on", so I thought ! I have lost both parents in the last two years, dad recently in Oct. I never thought that I would need help getting through life's struggles. I was just recently dx with mild depression, moderate ptsd, severe anxiety/pa's and moderate ocd. Wow, who would have thought?? I found this site while searching the web one day in hopes of finding help, understanding, compassion, and support !!! Thanks to people like you, the others here at HW, and my faith in God I am on my way to healing :-)

Blessings, Michelle
