I am doing a school project on depression and was hoping everyone could give me their opinions on what you think depression is. I am trying to find out the difference between what people think depression is, and what its actual definition is. If everyone could please reply with what you think depression is, it would be a HUGE help for my project thanks everyone tongue

Well Interested Student,

You've certainly opened a big ol' can of worms...LOL!!!  I think depression is being in a sustained state of hopelessness once you have reached an age of emotional maturity to comtemplate life on a timetable longer than a few hours or days.  Kids can have good and bad things happen to them, but they are quite resilient, and rarely dwell on things for any long period of time.  As people get older and become more complex emotionally, they start to see things in the "big picture" format...sometimes with no end in sight.  Depression occurs when a person does not have the coping skills to deal with something negative occurring in their environment, and take on a negative frame of mind and emotion.  Technically, all those negative thoughts and emotions fire off neurons and create a chemical imbalance in the brain, causing all sorts of havoc on the anatomy, which is why depression can be improved via various medications.  Depression can also be improved thru counseling and learning coping skills.

OK...I gave it a shot.  Good luck with your school project.

Of course, Interested student2, we're not supposed to write your paper for you, as you know. It's a project that requires you to do some research to get sufficient information to make an informative and well-planned document to present to your classmates. So I'll give you some leads for research:

1. Depression is (or can be) a chemical imbalance in the brain.

2. The neurotransmitters may be reduced, and significant neurotransmitters in feeling tone include Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and serotonin neurotransmitters. (You should do your research on those by looking them up on the internet.)

3. Some people do not produce an enzyme called folic acid oxidase which converts folic acid to folate. Learn about Deplin, a medication which supplies folate to the brain in people who don't produce the beneficial enzyme.

4. Often, depression may be treated with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (or SSRIs) to help restore the chemical imbalance. Learn about them.

5. Learn about whether depression can be cured and how people may have mild, moderate, or severe depression. Go online for websites about depression.

6. Write your own document so that you strengthen your writing skills and learn how to do research (which you will definitely need to know when you get to do college work). Be sure to give credit to people whose work you translate into your own expressions, since they are not your ideas.

7. If you want to use some information but don't know how to document it, keep the information and the source from which you derived it and ask your teacher to help you show in your paper how to document the source of your data.

8. And, by the way, some people who have had depression may be very intelligent folks who have good educations, are married, have families, and a lot of talent. They may be very healthy people with the right medications and lifestyles. You need to learn about how the illness is healed for those in whom it may be cured.

You may be very proud of your work if you do it all yourself!

Good wishes and good luck, too!
