Hi,

I recently posted this question but not sure if it went through, so I am posting again. I went to my psych the other day, she decided to keep me on 50mg of Lamictal instead of raising it to 75for fear of further agitation.

My question has to do with an additional med she prescribed Abilify. I do not respond to SSRI meds anymore and the doc felt Abilify would be helpful. My fear about this drug is weight gain. I am trying very hard to get in shape for the summer; this normally lifts my mood on its own.

Question, does Abilify itself make the body gain weight ( I heard some drugs can do that) or does it just increase your appetite? I can deal with an increase in appetite but need to know what I am facing here. I recently started riding my bicycle again and am trying to be more active. I am desperately afraid if Abilify (on its own) makes me gain weight it will add to my depression.

Thank you

Sam,

Yes your post did go through and has had twelve replies. The moderator added a topic title to the thread. 'Would a doctor prescribe...'

Just scroll down the page until you find your user name in the center column under 'started by'

Dear Joyce,

thank you so much for this quick reply. I am not sure where to post the topic. Would you be so kind to let me know. The question I cannot find answers to is not the opiate question; I am trying to find out other experiences with Abilify. I have seen the responses to "Will a Doctor Prescribe" but cannot find answers to my question about Abilify written above.

Thanks so much again.

I have been taking abilify and haven't had the problem of weight gain. I think everybody reacts to the drug differently. I know abilify has helped me in many ways and I wouldn't stop taking it for anything. So if I were you, I would try it and see if it helps you. Also see if it causes weight gain. If it does, you can always stop taking it. But it is wonderful drug for me. I hope that it works for you.

Dear Karen,

Thank you so much for this wonderful and encouraging response! I will keep you posted. I was prescribed 2 mg but I am scheduled to go up to 4mg in a week. Would you mind telling me the dosage you are on?

All the best,

Sam

I take ten mgs a day. It is expensive, so the doc prescribes me 20's and I break them in half. My insurance company wanted me to switch to something else, but the doc says no since I am doing good on it. It has changed my life for the better. I hope that it works that well for you.
