I posted in another thread that I am considering reducing Lexapro from 10mg to 5mg.  I have been only this for only one week (first time ever on an SSRI), but I don't like the side effects.

My question is:   Has anyone here used 5mg Lexapro and found it to be sufficient?

Thanks!

I believe that they generally start you out at ten. But I could be wrong. I would discuss this with the doctor to get good answers. You may be sensitive to it. But it usually takes a week or two for side effects to go away. I would try to take it as doctor recommended and be patient. If the side effects don't subside after two weeks, then I would discuss with the doctor about changing the medication.

I hope that this helps.

Thanks Karen. You are probably right about many docs starting at 10 mg, and that is what my doc did. But I have heard from others (including on Healingwell) that people sometimes start on 5mg. I have a pretty strong preference for taking less medication rather than more (or, I should say, "the lowest dose that will have the desired effect."). You are right -- I need to discuss with the doctor.

I hope that he gives you the five mg as you wish. Maybe ten is too strong for you. Best wishes...
