Looking for other people who have had ECT. Thoughts? Experiences? Feelings? Results? Memory loss? Looking for support and compassion during this scary time.

Sorry. Writing this from my phone...

HELP.

HI TRISH,

I HAD A COURSE, 6 TREATMENTS IN 04. IT SAVED MY LIFE. YES SOME CONFUSION, MEMORY LOSS, SHORT TERM AND A SORE HEAD THAT WENT AWAY. I HAD VERY RESISTANT TYPE DEPRESSION, WAS NOT EATING/DRINKING AND MEDICATIONS WERE OF NO USE. I HAD BOTH POLARS DONE, I WAS IN THE PSYCHIATRIC UNIT AT THE TIME, AS RECOVERY IS IMPORTANT.
AM HERE FOR YOU. WITH HEALING COMPASSION, JAMIE

I had them in dec of 2011 and they saved me...I had some minimal memory loss but that was about all. If I need more I will definitely get them. I was scared at first but the depression was so bad that I did not think twice. Good luck.....Debi

Hi Trish

I had 18 treatments in 2010, mon, wed, fri for 6 weeks. I was not so lucky as other members..it helped for a month or two, but my depression has proven to be very treatment-resistant. I believe it is worth it if meds and other therapies are not giving you some relief. I had very minimal spotty memory loss, nothing of import.

It is VERY safe and used tons in Europe and is gaining acceptance here. I truly hope you are one of the success stories.

Thanks everyone. I had my 3rd inpatient treatment today. I'm really hoping to be discharged on Wednesday or Thursday.

I'll keep you posted I guess.

I don't really feel like myself here. My mom came to visit today too which was really stressful. She's coming back tomorrow and will be in Seattle with me for like two weeks. Part of me really wants to get back on the plane with her and just go home. Can't think straight and I hate it.

Really depressed.

Hey Trish,

Good for you for giving ECT a try; you're very brave. Many of us know what it's like to be at that place where you've tried everything, but you're only getting worse. I know a lot of people who said it saved their life.

I, myself, had both unilateral & bilateral treatments (20+) back about 12 yrs ago. Unfortunately for me, I only had a 6-wk positive response (but, boy, did I feel great! If it had only lasted..) I did experience both short and long-term memory loss. However, I'm sure they've made great improvements in treatment since then, and I did have a pretty intense series of treatments. I found in-hospital treatment to be preferable, mainly because there's no gruelling travel schedule & waiting room to endure, and healing is done right 'there'.

Best of luck as you progress!
