Hello everyone,

It has now been 6 1/2 years of struggling with this major depressive disorder and medications, therapy etc are not working.  My P-doc has brought this topic up several times and to be honest it scares me to death.

Any information would be helpful and please be honest as I need to know the pros and cons.

Thank you,

Kitt

hi kitt, sorry you are going thru a hard time,
ECT saved my life, and this is when it is called for, re, resistant type depression, and or when everything else has failed. i had a course, 6 treatments in 04 and it saved my life. was not eating and barely
taking fluids. ok, you are asleep for a short period, the procedure
takes around 1.5 seconds, your toes and fingers wobble, the seizure,
you wake up, sore head, confused and disorientated for a bit. there is
some short or longer term memory loss, this is dependant on each
persons circumstances differently. you may have more than 6 treatments,
they are broken up over seperate days. hoping this helps.

with healing compassion 2 u.

jamiee,

Did your short term memory loss return - I hate the thought of losing memory ?

Thanks for your info !

Karen,  as you can see I am really frightened and all I have been able to do all day is cry and worry as I see the Pdoc in person tomorrow.

Love,
Kitt

Karen and Jamiee,

The appointment went well and no discussion re ECT was brought up by Pdoc.  I am to discontinue one med and see how that goes.  Have an appointment in 2 weeks.

Thank you both for your kindness and support.  You are both solid supporters and I appreciate you.

Hugs,
Kitt

Hi Kitt

I am sorry you have reached that point where you are considering ECT. My Pdoc studied in Europe and used all the time there.

I had 18 treatments over 6 weeks. Really no problems, minor memory loss, nothing significant. Unfortunately, they did not help my depression for very long. But every person's experience is vastly different and if I thought it would help, I would certainly try it again.

I, like you, have struggled for over 6 years...it is so discouraging sometimes. I recently put photos of some of my happiest times in my life, and of loved ones and I look at them every nite and morning and say"I have had a GOOD life and it is not over yet". It gives me motivation to keep going.

I truly hope you will find your "magic combo" soon. please let us know.
