Alexis needs your help.  She is living with a guy (just friends) who is taking advantage of her.  She has had him take her phone and say he wont give it back.  Isn't this a crime?  She lives in Canada.  Also says if he gives her phone back, then she has to move out and she has nowhere to go.  Can anybody offer some advice?  Also just a few kind comments would be appreciated.

I don't know if taking her phone is a crime (it could be considered theft, I guess) but it certainly isn't something that says "friend" to me.

If the phone is in Alexis' name, she can try talking to the service provider to have it shut off and service transferred to another phone (perhaps as in domestic abuse cases).

Either way, this guy appears to have no right to dictate your actions Alexis unless you owe him money.

Seriously, if he's this controlling, there's got to be another option. This could get dangerous for you.

Hey Alexis

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Calling the phone co as bessy said i a good idea, maybe file a police report. You need to talk to landlord if your name is on lease and start trying to find some new housing. I know that sounds overwhelming but I don't see your situation improving. If your name is nopt on the lease, see if you can find short term housing or even a room.

Please keep us posted lexi, we do care. You will be in my prayers

Hi Alexis,

You could check out kijiji.com to find a room for rent... Then you could ask for your phone back or you call the police for theft.
It depends where you live in Canada but in Montreal, there are some shelters you can go to and they will help you find some place to live. I guess every province has shelters or associations to help someone like you. You could also go to a CLSC to get help, it could be the best place because they have a lot of ressources.
Hope that helps! Have courage and get the help you need, it will work out for you I'm sure.

Alexis,

Please stay calm and re-read the posts listed above. go to your phone company to find out if they can just shut the phone off and give you a new one. 1st step to freedom.

We may not cause our problems, but we sure as hell have to clean them up. Stay strong make a plan and work it a little every day.

Good plan letting us know " getting by" :-)

Alexis, is there a consumer credit counseling service you can go to for help? Their services are free here in the US and they can help you work with your creditors to reduce your interest or payments or eliminate late fees. You might want to see what your options are with a bankruptcy attorney as well (not sure how it works in Canada). It may be a rough road to get beyond a bankruptcy - but that's better than living a life of hell in the meantime.

Do you or could you live near a college? It's probably easy to find a room mate in a college town.

Hi Alexis,

It's your phone not his, of course it's a crime to take it. It's called theft. Pretty sure that's a crime in Canada.

There are shelters in Canada where you can go. What he is doing to you is abusive. The shelter will help you find a place to live.

http://www.hotpeachpages.net/canada/canada1.html this link is to shelters in Canada. I hope you get out of this bad situation.

Alexis - is there a friend or relative you can ask to stay with for a few days? I think it's important to get out of that stressful situation for a little while.

Check out this link: http://creditcanada.com/

and find an office near you - make an appointment to talk to them! It's FREE! They can help you develop a budget. They will talk to your creditors for you to reduce your interest rates and or eliminate fees. They can also refer you to other social service organizations who can help you.

While the folks here obviously have concern for you, we are only words on a computer screen (sort of) - you must find the strength within yourself to do what you need to do for YOU! Only you can take that first step.

We can and will encourage and support you as best we can.

YOU CAN DO THIS!! All it takes is that first step!

Hi Alexis, I usually am in chronic pain or fibro forums but I could not resist in saying hello to another Canadian.

Yes we have shelters here and sounds like you are dealing with emotional abuse there. Your roommate can not just steal your phone that is theft everywhere. Is it his phone No then even if your phone was on his plan it's still your phone as long as you own it.

I really have no clue what is going on but we have laws, organizations available to help out almost everyone. You can call credit counseling and discuss bankruptcy options or have them help you make affordable payments to you creditors.

I really do not know how you need help if you are being held hostage in your home we could call help for you, if you are being abused then you need to remove yourself from the situation and seek help.

Remember we all think differently, I certainly do not want you to be upset, but there is only so much we can do. Are you able to leave your place?

I am going to say bye for now but if you really truly need help and the situation is putting you in any danger please call the police they will be the fastest. If not in danger then call social services maybe they can help find affordable low cost living accommodation for you.
Take care
Rose

Hi Grandmaroses,

Thank you so much for posting. I don't think she is being held against her will, though I could be wrong. But I believe he said if he gives her back her phone, she has to leave. I don't know if they are on a plan together. She can't go back to her mom because she called the police on her mom for using her credit cards. She run up her cards and put her in debt. So that debt somehow has to do with a lot of things and interferes. I am not sure how. The guy that she lives with had threatened to kick her out before because he said she complained too much. They aren't boyfriend and girl friend, just friends.

If you know some Canadian resources, I appreciate you posting. We don't have the same as you I don't think. But I see you posted social services. Even a mission would be better than what she is living with. I think she is afraid to make the move. We'll help her along, eh???

Again, thank you so much for posting. Your post was very encouraging.

Hugs, Karen

I believe you are in Ontario so google Ontario social services, I can not copy and paste from my iPad. All our provinces are different here I just call 311 and tell them what I am looking for and they give e numbers. I also suggest you contact a crisis help line again just google it for the area you live in, they are equipped to send help, help you access more resources for your unique circumstances. There are women shelters, hostiles, counseling services and I believe it's ONtario health insurance plan there. Most health services are totally covered by our provincial health care plans, doctor appointments, hospital visits, except ambulance.
The Internet is a wonderful tool for us to use all of us are here because of it.
Please if you need more help just say something.
Take care
