Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone knows if depression and anxiety always go hand in hand?

Thanks,
Taffy

I think that sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. But it can and that is what you are asking. I had anxiety along with depression, though I am now getting my anxiety in check. I have been taking xanax for 20 years and am trying to get off of it. I take pristiq and it has anti anxiety properties in it. So I am going to see if that alone will work and get off of the xanax all together.

I hope you get the answers you were looking for. Keep posting and know that we all care...

Thank you all for your kind replies. I have had periods of major depression since 1999. I did very well for many years and have had incidences since 2007, four requiring hospitalization. This period of depression is the first one with major anxiety. I am taking Xanax for the really bad times. It work's but not all that well. As if the depression alone wasn't bad enough..........

I'm glad I found this forum.

Have you told the doc that xanax isn't helping you that much? There are other benzos that you can try, valium, ativan and so forth. Let them know that the xanax isn't helping much with anxiety and see if you can try something else.

Hugs, Karen

Hi Turkish,

I have MDD and the anxiety can become worse, as time goes by.

You subconsciously worry "oh no, here it comes" and the anxiety kicks in. I am currently on Buspar 10mg 3x a day which works very well.

I also practice deep breathing for the anxiety and depression and mindfulness, staying in the present moment. This helps more than I can describe.

It takes practice and patience, but is well worth the struggle. IF you have not tried it I suggest you check out mindfulness.org they have lots of ideas to start with.

I also have had 4 hospital visits for MDD and hopefully will have no more.

Stay strong and keep posting, we all care here and will listen to you.
