yeah  Yes...I have been taking it for a while and have gained weight slowly. Now I feel like a fat pig and I am losing it slow thanks to my friends on this board. Thanks God for them.

Oh No!!!
That is what I am taking as well and weight gain just simply can't be part of the picture. Don't the drug companies realize that giving a depressed person medicine that makes them gain weight only makes us more depressed??
I am waiting for the "Barbie" pill - thin, tan and with a big sex drive!!

20mg!!!
I can't handle any weight gain.
I always thought that you were male - I pictured the Professor on Gilligan's Island. I probably still will though lol!!!
So far I haven't lost but haven't really gained either - I don't have a scale here. Have to weight (pun intended) until I get to my parents house.

Hello my name is Jessica and I have been completely perplexed from the extra twenty pounds I have been carrying around and cannot get rid of.  I have spent thousands of dollars over the past year and a half but the scale does not budge.  Not until recently I was told by a family member that anitdepressants can cause weight gain.  It all makes sense to me now.  Almost two years ago I started taking Prozac for social anxiety disorder, and almost instantly began gaining weight.  I have never had a weight problem in my life and feel stuck against a wall at this point.  The prozac has helped me immensely with my social issues, but at the same time I feel very unattractive and obsessed with getting rid of this extra weight.  I have tried many other medications like Paxil, Celexa, and Wellbutrin and Prozac has been perfect for me emotionally.  I wonder what my life would be like if I stopped taking prozac and continued to work out and eat healthy?  I am curious if that extra twenty pounds would come off.  It's also scary to think of the things that can reoccur in my life, which led me to take Prozac in the first place.  Has anyone stopped taking Prozac, and noticed they lost weight?  If so, how long after and did you have any of your old symptoms back?  Can anybody commiserate with me or have suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Jessica

Hi onya,  Welcome.  I just wanted to say that not gaining weight on Zoloft is not typical.  There are many people who have gained anywhere from 20-30 pounds, so you are quite lucky.  We have a thread in this forum dedicated only to Zoloft and Weight gain.  The links I posted from WebMD explain how each persons body chemistry works with these drugs.  That is why some people gain and some don't.  It is a roll of the dice basically....Take care

I lost 10 pounds within a few weeks of stopping Paxil last year. Now I'd been on Prozac for 8 months and within the past two months gained 10 pounds right back. Nothing fits and I'm frustrated. I sure hope this weight comes off again. I am watching what and how much I eat plus working out a lot, like always.

Hi veryconfused, welcome to healing well forum.  It is difficult to say which antidepressants will or wont make someone gain weight as we all react to these medications differantly due to our body chemicals being differant.  I was on Luvox and didnt gain any weight but there are many people who report weight gain.  I am now taking Effexor Xr and have lost weight on it...but still some people say they gain with it.  Zoloft is a big one that does cause weight gain, I was on that for many years and we have a thread dedicated to that.  I also believe that a lot of people dont have as many weight issues with Wellbutrin.  Have you spoken to your physician regarding this?

els, thank you for your reply Iam very confused how the weight just creeped up. I didnt notice at first the weight gain maybe it was because the meds. where working but when I did I was not a happy camper!!!!!! It is taking or seems like for ever for weight to come off. Working out and diet pills dont help, I guess I have to wait for my metabolism to speed up again.

I take 225mg of Effexor XR.  I have found that when I take it in the mornings I have a little boost of energy and can get somethings done.  I was taking Zoloft prior to the Effexor and it pretty much made me feel like a zombie all the time...almost like I didnt have any emotions and was kept at one level.  On the Effexor I dont feel like that, I can cry at sappy commercials and I can get mad at things that make me angry.  It is kind of nice to feel like a normal person again while taking an antidepressant.

all i can tell you is from my own personal experiance in taking antidepressants for many years.  I took prozac only for a few days I didnt react to it well.  However, I was on Zoloft for well over 5 yrs and like you said the weight just sneaked up on me.  I had to realize that I wasnt a teenager anylonger who could eat whatever I wanted and not gain a pound staying in a size 6.  It was a hard fact to swallow that I had gained well over 50 pounds and being over 30 it is so much harder to lose the weight as your metabolism does tend to slow down.  What I did was cut my carb intake...and went to eating only whole grains, nothing white, cut out as much sugar as possible and started reading the lables of the items I buy at the store.  If sugar is listed within the first 5 ingredents I dont buy it.  Eating like this has helped me to lose the weight and then some.  I also go to the gym and exercise everyday if possible.  I still take an antidepressant and know that weight is always going to be an issue with these type of medications.  However, in regards to weither I would want to be over weight and on an antidepressant or slim and depressed I would always choose the first....as my depression is unbearable untreated.  A few posts up from here I posted a link via webmd that explains why some people gain weight on antidepressants and why others dont.  It is an intersting article if your interested.

In general, Prozac is considered to be the best among the SSRIs as far as weight gain goes. Most people don't gain a lot of weight on it, but it can happen.
