To MyDogSam ......
I noticed several people replying to you said "get another dog". I can imagine your reaction to that ... but please read on:
I am a generation + older than you, but had a 7-year (on-and-off) relationship with a woman that ended 2-1/2 years ago. Shortly after that, it became known that my old cancer (of 2003/2004) came back and was spreading.
I am a dog-lover ... and had a Norweigan Elkhound (small male - about 48 pounds) since 1997 - bought as an 8-week old puppy! We, together, had been thru a lot - and since the divorce of the early 90's, I have lived alone (except for a dog) for over 20-years.
When it became clear that my returning cancer was spreading (2011) - and I returned from an emergency hospital stay with kidney failure (cancer spreading), I started to look for a future dog. Bear, my Elkhound, was 14-years old by then. I did, after much research, decided upon my childhood dream dog of 50+ years ago ... a Samoyed!
I finally did find a respected local breeder, and purchased a 12-week old male ... and for the first time, I was a 2-dog family. I did have a long hospital stay in early 2012 - and was so happy to see both of my guys to bring them home.
My Bear, died 6-weeks later ... overnight, but with me beside him. He did live to 15-years and 2-months. His remains will be buried with me someday. But ...... it has been so comforting to have the puppy - who is now a very mischievous 2-year old small male Samoyed (about 44 pounds). He does not take the place of Bear .......... but he is my buddy with his own personality - playful and affectionate. His name is Gizmo. And my HW name is "Gizzy 'n me"!
Does that tell you something? Please .... get another dog! Be good to yourself .... and your new next friend.
