Hi A-D, welcome to the forum. After the death of my mother I experienced grief that developed into dangerous depression. My doctor started me on Paxil, but no counselling. I developed a disconnected feeling, like I was a second behind the rest of the world, and feeling like I was walking with my body on an angle. The doctor diagnosed it as Vertigo. Not quite, but close enough I guess. I was weaned off.
Many years later, I had the "injury that broke the camel's back" and was declared disabled from working. The depression came back with a vengeance! This time, I was treated through a mental health clinic, started on Cymbalta (it has some 'pain fighting' abilities) and started a year of counselling with a wonderful clinician. A few months on Cymbalta produced the same problems I had with Paxil so, I had to wean off again.
A few months ago, I was overwhelmed again. This time, Wellbutrin. I figured it might help me quit smoking and that would be a great added benefit. No Vertigo this time, but, it gave me the feeling that I was CONSTANTLY hungry! Even after eating, I would not feel satisfied. This got worse, to the point of physical discomfort! It also left me feeling like I hadn't just smoked a cigarette and as a result, I was smoking TWICE AS MUCH!
So, third time was NOT the charm. I sincerely hope you find what works for you without any bad side effects. This forum is such an important part of my 'daily maintenance' since I have not found the help I need through medications.
You sound like a great Dad. Single parenting is not easy and most SP's are female, so, I salute you! Back when my kids were younger, I found a couple of groups for people like me for support. Parents without Partners, DASSH (Divorced and separated self help), and another I can't remember the name of. Being able to spend time with others that were in the same position, for me AND for my kids, was a huge help.
