Thank you so much for your kind words, M09.
There is a fringe element in Quebec that has always been xenophobic. Events such as the FLQ Crisis, École Polytechnique, and the separatist movement all play into a fear of loss of heritage and culture. As always, the young and the mentally ill are especially vulnerable to the ideas presented.
I wish that it was as simple as the hate creeping up from below the 49th, but this is a homegrown problem. Our horrible, broken mental health system, combined with an economy that is teetering on the brink, is a recipe for disaster. People are crumbling under the stress. Add to that a cultural distrust of outsiders, along with mental health issues, and you open the doors to what happened.
Thankfully every-day Canadians have been showing solidarity with our Muslim neighbors all across the nation. Mosques have been overflowing with flowers, many prayer groups have formed, and thousands of dollars have been raised to help the families of the slain.
