Hey all. I'm a bit bummed. The mimosa tree is not greening up this year. I was worried about it last year...it looked like it had fusarium wilt and I think it's dead.

I've been trying to think of a way to shade the plants that it used to protect from the sun. It's a toss up between umbrellas or maybe one of those bamboo fences. I think it will be tall enough to protect the plants from the midday sun and still have a 'tropical look'.

I plan on trimming some of the smallest branches back and perhaps hang solar lights, a hummingbird feeder or two, maybe a windchime, from what is left. The branches are too sharply angled to hang plants from, I think.

I feel the worst for the hummingbirds. That tree was a favorite of theirs. At least I still have the trumpet vines for them.

On the bright side, the next amaryllis that started blooming today is the white one with red streaks! Again, only 2 trumpets...but they are stunning!

I've added some pink and some yellow oriental lilies to the bed and am trying an apaganthus (African lily) this year. A 'blue' one!

Hopefully, this 'heat wave' is over and we'll get back to our normal May temps in the 70's.

Hope everyone is having a peaceful day.

HI all.

We lost our dogwood tree. took it down today. considering another tree, weep cherry.
But with the storms, do not know if it will survive next winter.

Found out we have turkey vultures living under the huge green evergreen bush in the back yard against the fence, the juveniles are learning to fly and find carrion. Apparantly next there for years. the next in the ground, 3 to 4 feet deep.

It is adults that have freaking the poo out of our dogs over the past 4-5 years. AND why the dogs run straight for the bush when let out.
All mysteries solved.

Peace

Sorry to hear about your dogwood tree. Do you know what caused it to die? Hopefully, whatever the problem was won't effect a replacement.

Wow! Turkey vultures! I have a skunk living under my shed, probably having her babies under there!

What if you limb up under the evergreen? Make it less hospitable?

Micah (my dog) and I encountered one of the turkey vultures on day on our walk. I had no idea just how huge they are! It was grounded and stretched out its wings a couple of times before taking off to roost on a nearby roof! WOW! Amazing to watch!

Planning to go to the garden centers with my neighbor/friend/fellow gardener today. I think I'll get a roll of bamboo fencing to protect my shade loving plants, now that the tree is dead. I had 'planned' a tropical theme around the mimosa and at least the bamboo fencing sticks with that 'theme'. It's pretty inexpensive, too.

Turkey Vultures,

They are so ugly and scary. But they are a magnificent bird and clean up the road kill.

Sorry to hear about the dog wood tree. They are real pretty.

Very comical about the dogs Trina. They know where to go for excitement.

Pitmom,

I had skunks last summer. they were living under a trailer that got torn down. Well, they decided to move to our neck of the woods. One was solid white. Freaked me out one night. I couldn't tell what it was but it kept heading towards me. Needless to say I got Jasmine inside quick.

They hung around for awhile and then moved on. None of us ever got sprayed but one sprayed under the shed and you could smell it from time to time. All in all it was a good experience... I loved seeing the white one. By looking out the window of course.

Have a good one all. It is sunny here today and I am going to town. Will be nice to get out in the sunshine, it rained most of the day yesterday, which we needed.

Hugs, Karen...

Mine was alright. Had tbone steaks for supper.

Have a good one everybody...

Yum!

Our 'instant summer' disappeared overnight. Cloudy with a chill breeze and just a sprinkle of rain, but the plants seemed to enjoy the respite. I'll still have to water tomorrow, though.

I took a bit of a spill, landing on my right butt bone the other day...bruised and quite sore still. Jarred my spine, too. Glad to take a break from the garden chores for a day!

The white amaryllis bloomed...it has some red/pink streaking on the petals...gorgeous blooms the size of my outstretched hand!

I've added pink/burgundy lilies and yellow/gold lilies to the garden. They're blooming now, since they were nursery plants, so there is color already in the bed. The hyacinths are done, as are the last of the white daffodils. If not for the new plants, the bed would just be green for a few more weeks!

The azalea started blooming today...hot pink! The lilacs will finish too quickly from the heat, but they are beautiful and there were enough blooms I could share a few with my neighbor who lost her bushes from construction a couple of years ago. Perhaps the cuttings will root for her.

My burgundy iris that I added two years ago have finally started blooming! I have buds on the purple ones and on the lavender ones too!

Picked up some tropical hibiscus on clearance...one looks like it will bloom yellow and the other...burgundy 'eye' shading out to hot pink and a peach fringe all around! I've never seen anything like it! Another gerbera daisy, this one in a hanging pot, a pot of white and pink geraniums and a pot of calibrachoa in burgundy shade. My plan is to drill screws into the branches of the dead mimosa tree so that I can hang pots of colorful flowers from them! I already have the extended watering wand! Lot's of red tubular shaped flowers, so the hummingbirds will still visit, I hope! Thank God for the clearance racks! The hibiscus were only $10 each and the hangers were marked down to $3 each!

I also snagged 2 mandavilla vines for a buck a piece! I still have some empty hanging pots to fill! Maybe I'll get lucky and instead of trailing down, they will climb the bare branches instead!

Thanks for sharing Pitmom...

Your flowers sound beautiful.

I hope everybody has a good day today. I am off to Costco. Never shopped there before. My brother in law sent us a card at Christmas time. It is time I check it out...

Take care all...

Thanks for posting Jamie. Good to hear from you.

I hope that the mri and scans give you some insight as to what is going on.

I hear a lot about that rubber tree. Sounds like it does grow like wildfire. Ha...

Hope you get a good sleep mate.

Take care...

Hi, I'm pretty new here but not to depression/anxiety. I've had high anxiety since I was a small child and depression for many years as well.

I enjoyed reading about all the planting and flowers. I have whatever the opposite of a green thumb is but I love looking and hearing about gardens.

Pitmom, it's still early for plants to come on sale. We're pretty much just starting our planting. I do get clearance plants even though I know they'll die but somehow it makes me feel good.

Hey kids--been out in the garden. Lettuce going great guns--tomatoes got accustomed to being transplanted, tho cucumbers are still settling in. 2 out of three summer squash have come up--and I am resprouting beans, because I set out the others too early, and they died. I just popped the winter squash seeds in, so nothing going there yet. I transplanted the eggplant yesterday, and covered them. Picked radishes yesterday--and the bok choy is going strong. Parsley, basil, and amaranth getting going. The peppers are still here at the house--I don't want to set them out until next week. Hm--what else? The marigold, calendula, and nasturtium seeds I planted are coming up. Here in Maryland, we have 80 and sunny.

I have been a bit down. Need to exercise, need to get a car. I have several I am keeping an eye on. I really wanted a Mini--but read the reviews and decided against it. Cute but breaks down a lot. A LOT.

Be well friends--tired and need to go water the herbs.

Hi Lendi, Welcome to the depression forum. I love Pitmom's descriptions of her flowers and stuff. I can picture it. I am glad you are joining us.

Myself... I am sorry you feel down. Once your garden is thriving I think that will pick you up. The first blossoms, the first fruit. You will be in seventh heaven I hope.

We had an 80 degree day not long ago and again today. It was almost too hot for me. I like 70's. But after tomorrow it is going to cool back down to the 50's. UGH... I plan to do some baking during the cool down.

I hope you all have a good night. I am getting glued to the tv. Big Bang Theory...

Hugs, Karen...

Welcome Lendi,

I am not so much a gardener anymore, since we live next to green acres and alll is shade.

Pitmom, I think you ask me about branching off the bush regarding the turkey vultures. Last year I did take branch off a good foot up so I could see what the dogs were up to, thinking they were trying to dig under the fence.

It as not phased the vultures one bit.

Karen, how is Jazzie doing?

My Maverick was sitting with me outside today, Alley was tired from a visit from the 3yr old next door early. So she was snoring on the couch.

Do I am reading, a big black bird swoops down, Man is laying in grass next to his stump in the sun. Looks at the bird and sniffs the air, ears perked. I say Mav, get that bird out of your yard, looks at me lays down
his head. 3 more birds swoop in pecking at the grass, he just lays there watching, Does not even bark.

Maverick has either turned Bhuddist or his 12 years has hit him hard and I will be seeing a decline soon.
My poor little old man.
To bad reality can not be Bhuddist.

Peace and strength all!

I had some gardening projects in progress - I grow Sarracenia, carnivorous pitcher plants - and they need re-potting this year. It takes a while to prepare the peat moss properly. First it was too dry, then we had 5 days of rain and it was too wet. The weather got warm and got it about dry enough to start my re-potting. And now I've had 5 days of vertigo, so haven't been able to work in the garden or do much of anything, really. Plus it's now gotten so warm I've lost interest.

Hopefully the vertigo will clear up soon and I can get back to it before I loose the plants entirely!

That's a heartwarming post Trina. I love reading about the dogs.

I use to have a venus fly trap Lynnwood. But I don't remember if it ate anything. Maybe one fly.

I hope that the vertigo goes away soon.

Hugs to all,

I'm sorry about that, Joyce :/ Is there a medical explanation? I don't want to raise false hopes, but depending on what caused it, it could be temporary...

(((Joyce))) healing thoughts to you!

I awoke with a headache...no big surprise...happens when I do laundry and hang the stuff out on the clothesline...muscle connection from the neck...it will pass eventually.

Have my first appointment with a dermatologist today...spot on my forehead that concerns me.

I'm like Pavlov's dogs...was at Lowes yesterday to look at fencing...heard the price gun being used to mark down plants...I just can't resist!!!! Now, the shelves in both greenhouses are full!!! Only one has the cover on it, for the more delicate plants...can never tell what the weather will decide to do here, even now! Thunderstorms expected later today and the cover will protect them from wind and hard rains.

The sugar snap peas are still only about 6 inches high. In the past, we'd have been eating them already! I think it's the location I moved the raised bed to.

Finally found some pineapple sage! Bought 2 plants this year! Good thing, too. It seems as though one of my hardy hibiscus did not come back this year either. Now, I'll pop both plants into that bed. Not only will it fill in, it blooms around the same time the hibiscus would have and while the hibiscus was burgundy, the sage will be red! So, not much difference in that area.

No sign of the butterfly weed or the hummingbird mint. I will definitely get more of the mint as the hummingbirds loved it. Not sure if I'll try replacing the butterfly weed, though. I've plenty of wild milkweed popping up all over for the Monarchs.

To be honest...I wish I had someone to go to the Dr.s appointment with me...I don't have a good history of dealing with bad news from a doctor. The last 2 times lead to panic attacks in the parking lot! At least, knowing this, I'm a bit better prepared and hope not to be caught off guard again. Will have a paper bag with me, in case I start to hyperventilate again. Plus, I've learned much about mindfulness from this site! So, in a way, I'll be taking all of you with me!

Put my humming bird feeders up yesterday since one was spotted. I put an oriel feeder up too and one came in. He was beautiful. He went from the oriel feeder to the suet and then the humming bird feeder. He was in three times! Haven't seen him today though.

I hope you all have a good day. Joyce I hope you feel better soon.

Love and hugs,

Karen...
