Hi all,
I'm usually over on the UC board, but was recently officially diagnosed with depression as well.
It wasn't much of a surprise, however as wierd as it sounds I guess I'm still a little in denial about it... but at least I've decided to get some help.

My doctor has brought up the topic of anti-depressants and I am weighing my options and doing a little research before I jump in with both feet. However, she also mentioned SAMe (i think that's what its called). Apparently its been used a lot in the states and UK, but has just recently been approved for use in Canada.

Has anyone used this? If so, what were your experiences?

Thanks!

Hi Badgutgirl - I am sorry about your diagnosis of depression.  However, I think it is very good that you are taking control of your illness by doing research and trying to recognize it and treat it.  A lot of people don't and remain in denial regarding depression deciding instead to suffer with it.  I don't know much about SAMe.  It is regarded in the United States much the same way that St. John's Wart is and that there is no concrete evidence or clinical studies proving that SAMe is an effective treatment for depression.  It is an over the counter supplement that researchers are now studying the benefits for Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia.  Your physician should be able to recommend a suitable medication for you that wont interact with your other medication and medical concerns.  Good luck

Hi BGG,

I generally browse the UC boards as well (diagnosed w/ UC in 1993).  I have probably had some mild forms of depression/anxiety building over the past 5-7 years.  However, I have always been hesitant to seek help, get and official diagnosis, or take prescription meds (daily Azathioprene is quite enough).  I have dabbled in St. John's Wort, without much success.  I have tried L-Tyrosine and other amino acids....nothing.  A few weeks ago, I began taking SAMe.  I have noticed some effect, a little more energy, clearer thoughts.  From what I understand, SAMe is gaining credibility that exceeds other "herbal" remedies.  Nevertheless, I think you are on the right track in seeking profesisonal help.  I haven't been able to make that move yet.

I also take Fish Oils and B-Vitamins, which seem to help with my "guts" and energy levels.  Honestly, I think the one thing that has the most impact on my psychological status is exercise.  When I run or workout, I feel a lot more energetic and productive.

I hope things go well for you.  I am a bit new to the on-line "forum" situation, but I have really found it helpful.  I wnet many years without mentioning UC to anyone, even close friends.  Talking about it really makes a big difference.  Good luck.  It would be cool to hear how you're doing.  I think my email pops up with my signature.  If not - tpiersol17@aol.com.

Take care,

Todd

Thanks again.
