I joined in Jan 2010 so I've been here nearly 10 years. Joined the Depression board much later though - I was on the Crohn's forum only for quite a few years.
@Paul - People leave forums for different reasons, but getting better is certainly a common one. Once people get into remission, most of them move on. A few stay on to give advice and support, but I think a lot of people find being surrounded by ill and sometimes desperate people depressing so they end up leaving.
If forums become too quiet I think that causes people to leave too - nothing to reply to gets boring! Unfortunately if not enough new people join and too many people leave, it can be very hard for a forum to recover from that. Healing Well dropped a lot in the search rankings, so it was literally harder to find on Google. The site has been redesigned to be more search-friendly, but only time will tell if that helps or not.
Personally I prefer forums to anything else. I've tried Facebook groups - awful experience. It was so impersonal, there was no feeling of a community at all. Posts would quickly get displaced by newer ones, so you could never get a long discussion going over many days or weeks. Anyway I've left all my Facebook groups 'cos of privacy/data concerns - I haven't closed my FB account but it's inactive.
