Trina, I gave up trying to grow grass. I used to have a nice lawn...then I got a dog! Between her paws and her pee, it was a losing battle. I expanded the flower bed and have it planted with a few shrubs (backbone of the garden) and various Spring bulbs and summer rhizomes. Crocus, daffodil, tulips, hyacinths for Spring. Oriental lilies, Orienpet lilies, day lilies for summer. I also have phlox, bee balm and perennial bachelor button mixed in. All of this pretty much lives on whatever water the sky gives them! It is densely planted...I only keep an eye out for any sign of disease caused by overcrowding...the weeds are kept at bay because the sun cannot reach them! The 'backyard' has a colorful border surrounding the 'dust/mud bowl' where the dogs play. More lilies, hibiscus (hardy type for NJ) oak leaf hydrangea (summer flowers, fall foliage color). The end of the property gets the least attention, so I have drought tolerant plants there. Ninebark, hibiscus, iris, coreopsis, a small barberry, yucca (bicolor) and catmint. I'm sure I've missed several plant names, but you get the idea. Really, the only things I water are what I plant in pots on the patio!
