Welcome to the depression forum! I know how you feel. I Lost my beloved dog last May 15th. I went without a pet until November 21st. It was so empty. But I did have a new found freedom of being able to come and go as I pleased without worrying about my pet. So that was kind of nice. My dog had separation anxiety.. Which in turn made me anxious to leave.
I was surprised with a puppy on November 21, the day before Thanksgiving and my birthday. I can tell you one thing, I wont be getting a pet in the winter again. It has been very trying. She goes potty on pads and I can't get her to go outside yet. I been trying. But I love her. She is German Shepherd and all black except for two white toes on a back foot. I named her Luna.
Which would you like for a pet? A cat or a dog? I love dogs but a lot of people love cats.
One thing you do need to do is find you with or without a pet. Learn to love the solitude of being alone. You don't want to depend on anything else for fulfillment. But I do understand how it is to be without a pet when you are use to having one. Or more...
I hope you are able to buy a home next year and get a pet. Maybe in the meantime go to the shelter and volunteer to help some pets there. That may make you feel better.
Have a good day and keep posting.
