How are you all? As well as can be, I hope, given the terrible year it's been. I am depressed, you'll be highly surprised to learn... >.>

I also have a request, which I'm not sure is allowed on HW but I'm a bit desperate and don't know where else to ask. If you remember, I'm in the looooong process of applying for Irish citizenship and had my parents' marriage certificate rejected. Well, two months later, the Irish department responsible for processing my claim finally got back to me (Ireland had been in a lockdown, so everything was closed). They scanned me a copy of my parents' marriage certificate. From that, I was able to learn where my parents got their marriage license, which was in Philadelphia. I was even able to speak to somebody in Philadelphia City Hall who told me I needed to send a bank cheque or money order.

So far, so good. I thought it would be simple to send money to America from the UK in 2020. I thought wrong.

I won't bore you with a list of the banks and money places I've been to. Suffice to say, banks do not send cheques abroad anymore and nobody has heard of a money order - I think a postal order is the closest thing to what you guys call a money order, but the Post Office informed me they don't send those abroad either. So I can't send a cheque or a money order and Philadelphia City Hall doesn't accept cash (I asked).

They will, however, accept a cheque from within the US. So, uh, this is where the favour comes in. Could I ask one of you living in the states to send a cheque on my behalf? I would of course pay you all associated costs (fees, postage, etc.), and a bit more besides for your time. They would send you the marriage certificate and you would have to send it to me. If you've got Paypal, I can Paypal you.

Apologies if this is breaking any forum rules, but I'm a bit desperate like I said. Find it absolutely ridiculous I can't send a cheque from the UK, but I really can't.

@Trina - Thanks! I have emailed you.

@Karen - Hi :p How are you? Just found out today we're in lockdown. Again. Oh joy rolleyes On the bright side, I get out of seeing my brother and his family on Christmas Day, I suppose. But it's going to be very quiet and probably not a great atmosphere. Plus my mum has ordered a massive turkey, but there'll be no one to eat it, 'cos we're not allowed anyone over for Christmas Day.

Just strange times all round really. This evening there were thousands of Londoners trying to flee London before the new restrictions on travel kick in at midnight. We've apparently got a new mutant strain of coronavirus that's up to 70% more contagious. And the fleeing Londoners will take it with them to the rest of the country.

Not much else to report. I've got a new bed and mattress, which arrived today. I will let you know what I think of it after I've slept in it tonight <_<.

@Green Beans - I appreciate your help! I had looked at one or two of those sites already, but I looked at a couple more - same story. They all do bank-to-bank transfers or cash pick ups, but I can't do a bank transfer without bank details. And they won't go and pick up cash from a Western Union, or equivalent.

Seems like cash or money transfer into another bank account is the only way you can send money abroad these days. I'm clueless as I've never sent money abroad or not for so many years, I've completely forgotten how I did it.

I heard about the mutant strain yesterday. I think it is here too. Not positive.

It sure has been a strange year. Hope 2021 is better.

I hope you can get the money sent. I know how much this means to you.

I hope your new bed is comfortable for you and that you sleep or slept well.

Take care Miranda. I also wish you a good Christmas. Looks like your mum will be freezing a lot of turkey. I am sorry you all can't be together.

Hugs, Karen...

I hope it isn't! If I was US president right now, knowing what I know (or, just as importantly, don't know), I'd ban all flights from the UK until further notice. I'm rather scared now.

The bed and mattress are great, but I still didn't sleep any better. Oh well >.> But it's adjustable, which makes sitting up reading in it far more comfortable.

I should be able to go to my mum's at least. Somewhat surprisingly, they haven't got rid of support bubbles, even for tier 4. (If you're an adult who's living on your own, you're allowed to form a "bubble" with one other person or household. That arose as a result of finding out how many single people were left completely alone and without any help during the first lockdown.)

Normally I'd be delighted for a valid excuse not to see my brother <_<. But I have to say, I would take seeing my brother for one day over having a new coronavirus strain which is more contagious and possibly more virulent.

On the plus side, my mum is great with turkey leftovers - often I enjoy the leftovers more than the main meal. But yeah, if she can't palm off some of the meat on my brother (who will probably pop round to say Happy Christmas - he just won't be able to come into hte house), she will probably have to freeze some of it.

Hi Miranda,

I hope you have a nice Christmas. I hope you get to go to your mum's house if that is what you would like to do. It is so crazy now. I did hear about the mutant strain the other day but haven't heard anything else, maybe they were just warning about it. I just want it to be all over, though I know it is going to take some time.

I get sick of turkey left overs. I run out of ideas. A couple turkey dinners and hot turkey sandwiches and I am burnt out on it. I sometimes freeze it and then forget about it. I forget about a lot of things in the freezer. Out of sight-out of mind I guess.

Have you been able to go for any walks lately and take photos? I remember you used to enjoy that. I have not been walking as the weather has been cold and snowy lately. That is something I need to do, but I fell one year on the ice (black ice you couldn't really see) and I get afraid to go. If there is snow or ice.

I hope you have a good night and a good day tomorrow. Five days until Christmas. It is almost here. Tomorrow is my husband's and my anniversary. The 23rd is his birthday. And two grandsons had birthdays earlier this month. Busy time for me. LOL...

Take care Miranda.

Hi Karen.

Well, we're turning into Plague Island - all of Europe has shut its borders to us now. Trouble is, it's caused the port of Dover to close down, thus leading to a potential disruption of supply chains right before, uh, another disruption of supply chains on the 1st January. Nothing to worry about there, then.

Leftovers do get boring but my mum has some nice dishes, including a turkey risotto made with turkey stock, and, er, I'm struggling to think of any others now. I know there's more, I just can't remember them. Turkey pie is another one, but don't think my mum has done that for a few years.

I haven't been for any walks lately, no :-/ The last proper walk I did was when I had to take my car into the garage a couple of weeks ago; I walked to my parents' house from there. What is a 5 minute drive in the car turned out to be a 40 minute walk up some steep hills, but I didn't mind it. It's amazing what you see when walking compared to driving though - I saw a small duck pond by the side of the road that I never knew was there, even though I'd driven past it a million times. It was lovely too.

Other than that I've just walked into town or wherever - nowhere interesting. I ought to take the car to nice areas and do a few walks.

Happy anniversary :p

Thank you Miranda. I am glad you can walk still if you feel like it. I think things are getting bad everywhere. Some of my friends have covid now. I am glad I have stayed to myself. I still worry though. I barely go anywhere but it is still in the back of my mind.

My BIL and SIL were here yesterday to look at our greenhouse. They are thinking of getting one. I think they will enjoy it. Wont happen until spring though. They come in kits that aren't that difficult to set up.

I hope you have a good day Miranda. And a merry Christmas.

Hugs, Karen...

Karen - After not knowing anyone who had Covid for the entire year, I learnt today that two people I know are in hospital with it. Both in their 50s. One is my cousin. He was sent to hospital for a suspected stroke (it wasn't that, but whatever it was [my mum couldn't remember], he needs to have an operation for it). Anyway, he almost certainly picked up Covid during his first hospital visit and is now on oxygen. My brother's friend is also hospitalised with Covid. They can't have any visitors, which makes it even worse.

Picked up my brother today. It was a long drive, with a lot of rain and fog. Probably shouldn't have done that, but my brother never sees anyone and stopped work a week ago, so I reckon he's very unlikely to have Covid. Anyway, it'll be nice to have him there for Christmas. But my other brother and his family won't be coming over, except to drop off some presents.

Hope you have a good Christmas too.

@FP - Hello! How are you? :p

Hi NCOT,

I'm doing ok. Just trying to hang in there.

I'm so sorry that the UK is on lockdown again. I wish this virus will go away already. Here, in NY, the governor is very concerned about the new stain of the virus and people coming over here from the UK. Unsurprisingly, the current administration is not restricting flights, so the governor is ordering people from the UK to quarantine or take a test. It's such a mess.

I'm glad you are able to spend time with your brother and parents on Christmas. Chrismas can be such an isolating time for people, and this pandemic has made everything worse. Oh well, this too shall pass.

Hope you have a good time with your family. Happy Holiday. 😃

Hi Miranda,

I am sorry to hear about your cousin and his friend. There are getting to be a lot of cases in the little town I live in. A friend of mine has it and all total in her family 7 people have it now. I am starting to get a bit scared as I heard another person today. I don't go out but my husband goes to the store each morning and to check the mail. I am just afraid he will run into somebody with it. Though he wears a mask which helps, but you never know.

It is cold today and windy. Supposed to be even colder tomorrow. I will be baking though so I will be warm. I am doing a chicken this year. We did turkey for Thanksgiving and just had a ham. So chicken it is.

I hope you have a good Christmas with your family. And truly a safe and happy 2021. Take care Miranda.

Hugs, Karen...

Hi folks.

I actually spent Christmas at home. Tbh, even though it was only a week ago, it's all a blur to me now. Had some disagreement with my mum, and I can't even remember what it was about. But I was seriously depressed (not over the disagreement itself - I was just depressed) and stayed at home for most of the Christmas week. When I did finally go over to my parents' (on the 28th December, I think), me, my mum and my brother went for a long walk. We found a street where nearly every single house was decorated - that might be a more common sight in the US, I dunno, but here it's rare and it did brighten up the walk.

Also went over to my parents for New Year's Eve. Not being able to go anywhere made no difference to us, as we never go out for NYE anyway. I'd rather stay at home, watching a film, which is exactly what we did. Didn't think much of the London fireworks/light display though - in fact I thought it was dreadful, but maybe it's just me being a cynic in my old age.

My cousin took a turn for the worse and had to be put into an induced coma. It wasn't Covid, though, it was the mysterious condition, which also made him unable to swallow. He is out of the induced coma now at least.

The new variation of Covid is scary. When it first appeared I was cynical about it, but it appears to genuinely be 50-75% more transmissable. We are seeing 50,000 cases a day now, which is equivalent to America having nearly 300,000 cases a day. We are put in ever higher tiers of restrictions, and had a 4-week lockdown in November too. None of which did any good apparently. They will have to shut all the schools down this time, thus messing up a generation of children's prospects even more than before.

On top of that, the government is predictably messing up the vaccination schedule already. You'd have to laugh if it wasn't so serious. People who have got their first dose are now faced with a delayed 2nd dose or no dose at all, or even getting another vaccine which works on different principles to the first one. As somebody else said, giving two vaccines which work in different ways is a perfect way to build up vaccine resistance. The vaccine manufacturers didn't intend for their vaccines to be misued like this and from what I've heard are baffled and angry with the government.

Just have to hope, somehow, we can still vaccinate enough people to stop Covid. Otherwise I'm worried we'll be facing lockdowns every winter if we don't.

Okay I'd better go. Going over to my parents and already running late as usual <_<.

PS: I can't bring myself to wish anyone a happy 2021, but I hope it's less bad than 2020 at least. Take care, folks.

PPS: The weather has been bloody freezing. Still no snow where I am though sad
