So my primary care, GP dr retired right at the start of covid and I am just starting to try to locate a new Dr to last me the next 25-30 years.

I had a so-called physical last week but she didn't do a urine test (kidney function), no pap smear, and no gyn exam. Says at my age it's "no longer indicated". Now I am (just turned) 63, but as far as I know I still have kidneys, ovaries, and a uterus!

Are you being told the same? Is it going to be like pulling nails to get the proper tests done?

I'm sure part of her argument is insurance based, she assumed (wrongly) that I am Medicare only -- but I have a Medicare Advantage Plan that clearly DOES cover these tests. And I'm perfectly happy to PAY for my health care.... she wants me to come in to discuss, I see no point in wasting my time if she's not going to provide the level of healthcare I"m looking for.

What have y'all experienced or am I way off base here?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lynnwood, good to see you posting. I'll tell you what I know about those tests you mentioned. Most doctors will do an annual urine test especially if the patient has any condition like diabetes (or suspected high blood sugar problems, family history, etc.), a history of kidney infections. If my doctor didn't order a urine test for me once a year, then I would ask for one.

I asked my uro-gynecolgist about pap smears. I just turned 73. She said once a woman is about 65, she doesn't need a pap smear unless she's had positive smear results in the previous 10 years. However, a gyn exam would advised for cervical cancer (and something else but I can't remember what...).

So, maybe you could look for a gynecologist so you can be sure all that is checked out. But for sure an annual urine test is important for kidneys, liver and sugar.

I've never had any of these annual and semiannual exams rejected on my Medicare Advantage plan.

Yeah, it's not the insurance company I'm having trouble with, it's the doctor basically refusing care.

Anyone ever tried a concierge Dr?

General practitioners on the upper east coast, in general, have not done gyn care in 30yrs.
Just saying....

I'm in Atlanta, and haven't needed a separate Dr for routine gyn exams for 35 years. Now if something is out of the ordinary, yes....
