Has anyone tried St Johns Wart or Vit B6? Does anyone know of other natural remedies for depression?

I havent tried st johns wort as i do take antidepressants and i know you arent supposed to mix both. I have heard good reports about it though. If you are a girl, you need to be careful and ask advice from your doctor before taking st johns wort as my doctor told me it can affect the contraceptive pill.

Hi Qut --

Worth doing a google search for St. john's Wort. -- People tend to think if it's natural there won't be any side-effects like oyu can get with SSRIs, etc., but the truth is, just like SSRIs, it works for some, doesn't for others, and has a list of possible side effects. And of course Victoria's quite right, it is well documented that it can interact badly with other meds. So do just make sure that you go into it informed if you decide to try this route.

Sorry, don't know about Vit B6. Again, though, a google search for this and "effectiveness", "benefits", "placebo" (to see how it fares agains placebos), "side effects" or some such combo might yield some helpful info.

I used to take SAM-e.  It is a little on the pricey side but worth it.  You can get coupons for $7.00 of on each purchase on the SAM-e dot com website.  You can purchase it in the Supplement isle in grocery stores, drug stores or Health food stores.  The Nature Made brand is very good.  I have had major/clinical depression most of my life and took it for three years and was depression free.  I started on 200mg for about a week and then went to 400mg - once a day on an empty stomach.

If you would like more information you can go to the SAM-e dot com website and it will give you more information or you can "google" SAM-e.  It is documented in many well respected and scientific medical/Psychology journals for depression and considered very safe.  It is an amino acid that is naturally produced in our bodies, that we don't get enough of in our diets or that can decline as we age.  It was first used as a Prescription in Europe for depression and it came over to the states in the early 90's.
