HI, :-)

I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS HAD SUCCESS WITH NATURAL/HERBAL REMEDIES FOR DEPRESSION??  I GOT OFF OF ANTIDEPRESSANTS 2 YEARS AGO AND WAS DOING PRETTY WELL. NOW, DUE TO STRESS FROM MEDICAL PROBLEMS , MY DEPRESSION IS CREEPING BACK.   I HAD BEEN ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS BEFORE.  I DO NOT LIKE THE SIDE EFFECTS OR THE WAY YOU FEEL WHEN YOU FIRST START ON THEM.  I AM ALSO VERY SENSITIVE TO MEDS AND COULD NOT TAKE MANY OF THE POPULAR ANTIDEPRESSANTS.  I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN HEARING FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD SUCCESS WITH OTHER REMEDIES - INCLUDING DIET CHANGES.  PLEASE RESPOND... yeah

Hi Rhythmrn,
I had success with amino acid therapy. I was on antidepressants for a while and they never really helped me so I decided to look into alternative forms of therapy. I found a company that will test your neurotransmitters and by looking at your results from the lab and symptoms they suggest a protcol for you of amino acids. It dramatically changed my mood and decreased my anxiety. I posted this informaiton on another post I think titiled amio acid therapy. But I have had a really good experience with this form of therapy. I hope you find an alternative that works for you.

Take Care,
Annie

The only natural remedy I know of is St. John's Wort. I can't take it right now because my asthma flaired up pretty bad this weekend, the chest tightness is aweful.

Good luck with your quest, I'm curious as to what other will recommend.

:-)  Therapy is the best and most lasting treatment, in my opinion.

I hope you will consider giving it a try!

Have you tried SAM-e? (Amino Acid) I used it (400mg once a day on an empty stomach) for three years and was depression free. It is considered very safe. You can buy it over the counter in the Supplement isle at any grocery store or drug/health food store. You can go to the SAM-e dot com website for more information about it.

5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor to serotonin, could be added to the list that includes St. John's wort and S-adenosy-L-methioine (SAM, AdoMet, SAMe, SAM-e). For the sake of clarity, it should be noted that SAM is not an amino acid, but it is composed of adenosine (nucleoside) and methionine (amino acid). SAM donates a methyl group to a substrate, with the assistance of specific methyltransferases (enzymes), to generate a methylated product. An example includes methylation of norepinephrine (substrate) to generate epinephrine (product).
