hey,

so i have been taking an herbal pill for my depression/anxiety called St. Johns Wort for about a month now.  It's a mood enhancer, so it helps get me out of my rutt... But I've notcied that since I've been on it, I have gotten a lot angrier! And i don't know why! Either its the pill that is making me angry, or the fact that the pill is getting rid of all my more over-powering emotions, letting my anger come through more easily.. If that makes any sense... But I talked to my therapist about it and she suggested that maybe I try another herbal pill called Sam E.  I have never taken it, but I was wondering if anyone knew about it..Or if anyone has ever taken it, you expiriences and whatnot.

thanks a lot!

Hi ya famous, I have taken both of these many years ago and I had little to no benefit from them.  I would think it depends on what diagnosis you have and what kind of situations your facing...Such as I have Major Depression, anxiety/panic disorder and PTSD so it was just a matter of me coming to terms with the fact that I needed an antidepressant and the herbal route wasnt for me.

I do hope you get some useful posts regarding this. :-)

Hi - I took SAM-e (it is not an herb..but a dietary supplement) it is an amino acid that our bodies produce naturally, but can stop producing when we get older. It is considered very safe. I took it for three years and it worked wonders, and I suffer from Major depression. A brand I highly recommend is Nature Made. I took 200mg for the first week..and then went to the 400mg. It is a bit on the expensive side, but you can get $7.00 coupons from their website (SAM-e dot com) and also many drugstores or grocery stores offer a "buy one get one free". I would not take SAM-e with St. Johns Wort though..as there can be problems with mixing dietary supplements, sometimes with herbs. There is also a book about SAM-e that you can rent from the library or buy at bookstores, or Amazon dot com, if you would like to read more about it. I have a friend who suffers from severe depression and he has been taking SAM-e (400mg) for about two years and it has worked very well for him. It needs to be taken on an empty stomach at least 45 minutes before a meal. I tried to limit my alcohol consumption when I was on it. Alcohol and antidepressant whether presciption or dietary supplements don't mix well.
