I've been taking L-tyrptophan for acouple of months now, along with B6 at bedtime.  Dosage is 2000mgs, but started at a low dosage and built up to 2000mg.

This morning when I woke up and had an awful feeling that I should hurt myself. I also have been having alot of strange dreams.  I've have had other times since taking it where the thought of hurting myself have risen.

Is it possible it could be from the L-Tryptophan?

Here are a list of other meds I am on.

Oxy-IR 2.5mgs 3x/day and a full tab at bedtime(5mgs)

Clonazapam .25mgs at bedtime

Flexeril 10mgs at bedtime

Zopiclone 1 1/2 tabs [7.5mgs/tab] at bedtime

Synthroid .025 mgs

Supplements

Mag/Malic Acid 500mgs

Ester C 1000mgs

Multivitamin

Vit B5

Vit B6

I should also mention that since the end of Dec I occasionally get a really hot internal feeling in my upper body and have a throbbing that I can feel in my upper back.  Had my blood pressure taken and it is fine.

Any ideas?  Help!

Tryptophan is simply an amino acid, so I doubt that's causing it, but you never know.  You are on a lot of other medications that could have disconcerting side effects (especially pain meds and the clonazapam), even if you've been on them for a while.  If you feel the urge to hurt yourself, don't let yourself be alone during that moment if you can possibly help it.  It must be an awful feeling; I hope you can get some help from other members about this...

Sweeter
Contact your doctor ASAP if this continues.
They are the only ones that can answer that, and with all of the different meds you are on I would not take a chance.
Please stay safe and keep us posted.

As others have said, you definately need to see your Dr. as soon as possible.

Although I never had the problems that you are experiencing, I have had problems with l-tryptahan. I get migraine headaches, and I went through a period of about 2 months where I was in constant pain.  Started to suspect l-tryptahan supplements, and as soon as I stopped, the headaches returned to "normal".  So I definately has side effects for some people.

Good luck; let us know how you are doing.

well, I went to see the dr. Couldn't see my own as he is gone till April. This dr didn't think it was the L-Triptaphan as it is an amino acid. Didn't think it was the meds or the combination of them either. He thinks I have depression/anxiety that isn't being treated properly.

I wanted him to test my thyriod as it hasn't been tested for a long time. But I guess I will have to wait with that when I see my regular dr. For now, he said I should just take some extra clonazapam till I see my regular dr.

I will decrease the L-T down to 1500 mgs starting tonight. I am also going to get a massage tomorrow and i hope that will help with my super tight neck, shoulder and upper back muscles.

Decided to take some time off work to take some extra pressure off. As you can see from my signature below, I have my hands full!

Thanks,
Sweet

I called my drs office today, and I can't get in to see him till April 26! I know he will be back at the office on March 29, so I am going to call that day and see if I can talk to him and get my Pharmacist to call him as well.

Feeling abit better today.

Hi sweeter,
I just started L-tryptophan five days ago.  I am only taking two to three tablets at different times during the day.  Only one time did I take 3 tablets before bed (like the bottle prescribed) and I could tell it was too much for me.  (I could not sleep at all and had a few nightmares)  I don't know if that was what is was from. But I am excited because I feel such a wonderful lift and my aches and pains are not nearly as bad.  I only take 1000mg to 1500mg.  Five days ago I felt suicidal and my muscles and bones hurt so bad I thought I was dieing.  But now I no longer have that cloud over my head.  I still have some aches and pains but I feel 85% better.  I still have trouble sleeping though.   I am hoping the L-tryptophan will produce melotonin (helps sleep) over time...(That is what I read somewhere)

called my drs office today, as I knew he was coming back today. Sure enough, there was a canellation for 3 pm! So I got to see him!

He has prescribed me Buspar. I am not overly thrilled with this, as I have used it before and didn't have a good experience. Maybe this time will be different. I will start at 5 mg at bed time, and get up to 5 mgs 3xs/day. He also gave me abit more clonazapam to take when necessary.

I also am going to have blood tests taken. Get my thyroid rechecked, hormones for menopause, and I think an am Cortisol too.

So, I guess I've been doing better, no more thoughts about hurting myself, Thank the Lord! Was abit anxious today, probably because of my appointment and wondering what the dr was gonna say. etc.

So, I will try the new meds tonight! Wish me luck, or better yet, pray!

Sweet!
