I been type 2 diabetic for about 5 years now and on the meds for it, but I went to my pdoc yesterday and was told my sugar levels where back to normal (YA for me lol) and not in the diabetic range now

For me living in Alaska and at one time owning my own bush plane but I sold it do to my losing my pilots licence from the dx of diabetes so I guess I'm asking can I go back to flying again if I pass my physical now as I really had a hard time of just not getting up and flying around when I feel the need to can this be for real as long as I stay on my diet????

Hi up there in Alaska.  I hope you had a nice Christmas.  I can't answer your question with any authority of course.  That's between your doctor and the FAA (is that the right group?)  I suppose the reason would be possibility that a diabetic could pass out because of unstable blood sugars.  I don't know how they view having normal sugar levels while under medication, so I suppose you'd have to re-apply and see what they say.  Sorry I can't help more but congratulations on the achievement because that's great for your long term health!    :-)

Cowboy,

There are a few articles that I found that may help you.

I might be able to get a pilot's license after all!

The question is answered about 1/2 way down the page

That's all I could find on short search but there are answers out there. You need to contact your local FAA office, I think, and work it out with your doctor.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I'm afraid I don't think you'll ever be a commercial pilot but, (from what I understand), the doors are not all closed on holding a private pilot's license. The difference between the two licenses comes down to whether you have responsibility for other people's safety or just your own. (My cousin is an airline pilot and my Dad was RCAF). In 2006, the FAA updated some of their license-disqualifying regulations - meaning: you aren't always disqualified on the grounds of the Diabetes diagnosis only. The regulations on what you can and can't do also depend on where you are. It does start with passing a medical exam but, the difficulty will come with the classification you already have, a "pre-existing" condition of Diabetes.

Another place to start/check out might be......

The Alaska Occupational Health web page:
(DOT (FAA & CDL/FHWA) Exams & Regulations - FAA Medical Certification Regulations & Exams)

http://www.akochealth.com/secondary/DOT.html

Good luck and (hopefully) Happy Flying!
