My DH is a T1 and he has neuropathy in his feet. Yrs back we had a pcp who felt that she could take care of ALL of my DH's health issues. Never gave him info, told him she would answer his questions, if he had any. He didn't realize that something had dropped into his work boot and started an irritation on his big toe. He saw a red spot on the toe and waited to see if it went away. He finally told me what had happened and I told him call the dr. She brought him in, didn't like the looks of the toe and sent him to a specialist. She hated to send us to a specialist. This dr examined my DH's toe and said if my DH was 80 yrs old he would just cut off the toe. I said 'No, you wouldn't!'. The dr had to operate on the toe and thank God my DH still has the toe. We had to have him on a Pic line for 6 wks w/ an antibiotic.
We have since changed PCPs and this dr has insisted my DH go to specialist for his many health issues and it has been an excellent idea.
Also, he has to be more aware of his body. He checks his feet every single day, in the morning as he gets dressed, and after his shower. He also checks his shoes to be sure there is nothing in them. He never goes barefoot or just socks. After a shower/bath, be sure your feet are totally dry. The dr may suggest a particular lotion to put on your feet, one thing we were told, Don't put lotion between your toes. Pls see the dr ASAP, before this gets any worse.
Hope this can be easily cleared up for you. Good luck.
God bless. Alice.
