Well I finally did it. I got a new doctor. He has a small practice and I think he is the only doctor in the practice. He told me my numbers are good and will come down. He said I need to focus more on the a1c then the numbers itself. He was appalled that my old doctor didnt even consider giving me the metformin extended release to get rid of the diarrhea. So he has me on 2000mg of the extended release metformin 1000 in morning and 1000 at night. He says after trying this if we need to add another medicine to the mix we will. So I started the new medicine tonight. I admit I ate badly because of time restraints. I had a spicy wrap from Wendy's and a value fry and two hours later my sugar was 135. Not bad for what I had. Normally it would have been 160 or 180. Goes to show I know what my body needs. He said I may never get perfect numbers but we can manage the complications. He even explained more about diabetes to me than my old doctor. He is energetic and not like most doctors I ever met. He listened to me and didn't waive my concerns away but explained why he felt the way he does. I like him so far.

Yes it feels great. Now it is just adjusting to the metformin er and higher dose. I think next month he is going to put me on a cholosterol medicine because he said diabetics should be on them Even if choloesterol is good. This morning my fasting was better than before. It was the same as it was last night so this may help the dawn phenomenon

According to my doctor, the most recent recommendation for women and cholesterol medication is that it can be taken three times a week for benefits. Previously, the dosage was daily but there are many risks that come along with these drugs that lower cholesterol, especially for women. When I had expressed this concern, she understood exactly what I meant and told me about the newest research results, so I am only taking it three times a week.

Remember that you can still control most of your blood sugar yourself with diet and exercise. As you know, I'm on metformin but I have continued a very low carb diet mostly because it keeps the blood sugar down and nearer to normal levels with only metformin. I do not want to go on other diabetes medication for my own reasons (their side effects, for the most part). I realize everyone needs to make their own choices.

I'm glad you are no longer seeing that other doctor! I hope all goes well.

If I can avoid other medications then I do. I'm still eating low carb. Last night was a exception because of time. I will only do it if I need to do to get my numbers where I want. I want to get my fasting to at least 110 or below and my a1c to under 6.
