I've been doing some Googling about this and am now more confused than ever. What role does fasting insulin play? A year ago my fasting glucose was 88 and my fasting insulin was 4 (range: 4-13). The A1c was not done at the same time unfortunately. So if insulin is borderline low, is that good or bad?

I honestly don't know. I've never been tested for this. Here is a link to a site that explains more but it may not answer your question. /labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/insulin/tab/test/

I know the c-peptide test tells how much insulin we produce but I think most doctors just go by the regular blood sugar tests of fasting and A1c.

Sorry I can't help more.
