Hello all:

My A1C is 5.7. A bit concerning I think. I have read a lot about carbs etc. and how carb restriction and good eating and exercise produces good results. But, such carb restriction usually results in weight loss. I am the opposite. I want to get fat! I am at least 50 pounds underweight, but, I do not want to binge on carbs to get fat and thusly head toward diabetes, so, I do not know what to eat.

Stats: 134 pounds
Height: 6'2"
Dislikes: fish, swallowing pills
Lactose intolerant and have acid reflux.
Also, not tons of money to even buy food. Too rich for food stamps.

So, I want to gain weight, but, how? And what to eat? I look and feel horrible. My Vit D is on the low side too. I am a wreck.

Appreciate comments/suggestions.

Thanks..

My goodness. Happy Valentine's Day!

Bob/BookRead, I remember your posts about your daughter and I hope she is doing better. Now, let's see about you!

A 5.7 A1c is equivalent to an average 126 blood sugar and that's not a 'normal' average for a non-diabetic. Have you seen your doctor and talked about gaining weight? And have you had some blood work done? I think before you start on a trek to gain weight that you should find out how all your tests come out. I'm wondering about the reason why you're 50 pounds underweight. Do you have any idea?

Unless there are clinical reasons why you're underweight, I think the best way to gain weight is to eat more nutritious food, more calories but I'm not a nutritionist which is why I suggest talking to your doctor.

So, really, the best and safest answer I can give you is to start with your doctor and find out if you have any underlying medical reasons for being underweight. Sorry I can't be more help. Maybe others have ideas?

Hi:

Thank you for your replies. I have seen my doctor and had several tests. Nothing really special showed up. The primary reason why I am underweight, at least in my opinion, is simple. I am under stress, have depression, and simply do not eat that much food. Most days I do not even eat 1000 calories. The reason for that is, as previously said, I do not know what to eat. And, in some ways, I am poor. I did go to a food pantry once, and appreciated what they were able to provide, but, it was pretty much processed food. Unless I have some deadly disease I am not aware of, which, is possible for any of us, the solution seems fairly obvious, construct a meal plan that gives me at least 2000 calories a day, and then, start weight training. And work to eliminate the stress and depression. Stressed because I am struggling in all areas of life. Depressed because I am trapped in these circumstances. And burnt out too.

Many recommend Ensure, etc., but, those products are full of sugar. My A1C is already not good. I would prefer, however, to drink my calories though.

Just recently turned 50, and just worn out and need some bold positive life changes.

I think you realize this is not an easy situation as you yourself say you are under a lot of stress and suffer from depression. I think those issues need to be addressed. Have you discussed this with your doctor? What can be done to help eliminate or improve the situations that are causing you to have stress and depression?

As I wrote, if there are no clinical reasons for you to be so underweight, then gaining weight would be helped by consuming more calories than you're doing. There are only so many high-caloric drinks available that are not full of sugar. Ensure or Boost, unless they are the ones NOT full sugar, have a lot of calories but in the long run, I don't think those are a good choice. First of all, they can be expensive and you don't get any bulk. They are made to be complements to a regular diet. If you ate three meals a day and had one or two of these drinks (the reduced sugar kind) in between, then you could be increasing calories.

I think you need to eat more. You wrote that you don't eat much food, so you already know that's a problem. In addition to protein (meat, fish, poultry), you also need fresh vegetables - not only for nutrition but for fiber.

I wish I could help more but I think you've already pointed to the problem and I hope that you can start working on solutions.

You have to eat more calories if you expect to gain weight. I would suggest staying away from the process foods and eating foods high in fat. Things such as nuts, seeds, avocados, organic butter, eggs and maybe fry some salmon patties in coconut oil. Stay away from the process oil such as canola and cottenseed oil and margarine. These process oils and hydrogenated fats are not good for the body. Fats are double the calories of carbs and protein so it will not take as much to increase your weight. You have to find a way to get rid of the stress and depression. Prayer and meditation can help.

Thank you all for your comments.

It is challenging to maintain a proper perspective when you are drowning, when your life has become a succession of domino-like sequence of negative events. I just learned my daughter has gained even more weight, even though her caloric intake is not that much. So, she gains on limited food, and I am losing weight, and meanwhile, we continue to drown in bills.

As for getting on a budget...in theory, that is not necessarily a bad thing. But, when one continues to be slammed by unexpected expenses, adhering to a budget, no longer is possible.

Perhaps I am a jinx, or destined to live in poverty. I did experience a fair amount of happiness earlier in life and was blessed financially. But, through poor money management and a job loss, those days are long gone. My hope levels are pretty low these days. So, I am headed out now to another day of sitting in traffic another day, drowning in misery.

Sincerely,

Beans and Rice Bob

I'm really sorry about your situation. The best I can suggest is that both you and your daughter need to speak to your medical doctors about your problems for both the physical problems and your depression. Are you able to look for another job? Have you looked into sources of help in your community? Job re-training, supplemental funds, and so on?
